Swearing on the Forum

Err, just a quick question really. Given the possibility of young’uns being present, is it a good idea to use ‘foul’ language here?

It’s not that I fear of offending said young’uns, more that not knowing the current vocabulary of the ‘street’ i may appear old, out of touch and unhip!

Are the any rules Jay? Oh great eye shield? (Ok supervisor - geddit?)

lol, well if you spell it right then obviously it will be put as stars, ie… ****

Its on Jay’s behalf then to take the matter into his own hands if someone is swearing too much or just being rude. There’s no specific rules set for ‘foul’ language except the ‘stars’…

It’s a fair point, and we’ve discussed it amongst ourselves on more than one occasion. As the community has developed and a real common theme of us being a diverse, helpful, and inviting bunch, we’re leaning towards the direction that we want the site to be clean, so it appeals to as many people as possible. Thus, we don’t think swearing is appropriate, not just for toddlers, but also to make the site viewable at work without worry of viewing inappropriate content at the most inopportune moment (as is usually the same, i.e. your boss walks by just as you see something you’d rather not).

Of course, with any policy, you can’t please everyone, and some people might be miffed that they can’t express themselves in a way they’re perhaps more used to. This is no square-club, but at the same time, to build something great, you’ve got to have direction, and this is where we’re going.

So please, don’t swear, or post up inappropriate content, i.e. full nudity or other offensive material. If people do, we’ll have to have a word, and yep, it’s already happened once today, for the first time.

***** me that sounds fair enough.

Oh that didn’t last long!! LOL

Pity you’ve had to have a word already tho… must have been awkward.

RIGHT GANG let’s behave!

I make Jay’s words mine! I had an quite embarrassing experience last week when a lady that works next door to me came into my office and couldn’t avoid to see my screen onped. The colourfull page, which I wont mention here (not LB) called her attention and she asked what I was looking at? I said it’s one of the bike forums I’m a member of. She said ‘but what are they actually doing there?’

She was pointing to some guy’s avatar which was a naked ladies arse wide opened ! Not against that, it was a really lovely arse but I wont be visiting that site from my work anymore… I even didn’t try to explane what was that as she didn’t give a chance saying that it was my business. Obviously she didn’t like it! (old bitch). Just use your common sense we will all be ok!

Swearing has its time and place but I think on forums its a bit of a no no. Like Andrew implying, you don’t know who is looking at the forum. Many people visit the forum without signing up (which is a pitty) but maybe be put off signing up because of someones foul language. As a way of attracting more members and riders it would be wise to keep everything clean.

This is a wind up right!!! What a load of ****!!! oops sorry ****! Quite frankly who cares if ‘youngsters’ look on the site…if your not old enough to ride a bike go look at the tellytubbies web site. Have you read any Bike mags…full of swearing in them but they dont put a health warning on them do they!!!

Oh and Bike2travel says ‘Jays words are my words’ yet later in the post he says ‘old bitch’…now unless he talks to female dogs, then that’s classed as swearing hmmm

What… nobody swears when they talk to each other do they??? Yeah right!

The idea that this site is going the way of being ‘PC’ is quite frankly a put off, if I think something is a load of ******** then ill say so…i’m not gonna say ******* or get my thesaurus out…oh yeah, before you all start whining, theres this BIG button called Spell Check, use it because somebody swearing does not offend me but having to spend 5 minutes trying to work out what some people have said is trully offensive! I mean ‘onped’…not even a bloody word is it!..and yes I too was born in another country and learnt English as a second language…not much to ask is it!

babyj ! that’s the jocke, sorry my humour is not quite british yet! lol

Yes the situation I have described did happened to me and it was embarrassing but the avatar was almost sex explicit on the screen, all that was missing was a dick, lol

your avatar is funny and not ofensive, in fact I would copy it if I have seen it before. I was reffering to extremes. I come here to feel confortable and the need to restrict myself is enough at work. You are right the bike magazines do sware a lot.

The rest of your post i will ignore and leave it for when we meet! I’m sure you will see that I acn write better than I speak this language…

I’ve gotta admit I’m with BabyJ, in that I don’t think it’s really an issue. As it’s a web forum it’s open to all and, in the public domain. There are going to be posts that offend some people at some time, but from what I’ve seen here I don’t think there’s an issue. The forum members will become self censoring as the site matures.

Jay, I think it is sad that you’ve had to contact a member to discus there inappropriate language, posts or whatever it was, it cann’t be a nice situation for you to be in after putting all the hardwork in to get the site of the ground, but as they say that’s life.

Just to reiterate, we dictate the tone of the site, let’s make it a place we want to hang out in. That’s my 2p, now get back to work.

I’d like to thank Midlife Crises for being so far the ONLY mature person on this post, and to dedicate this my last post on LB in his honour.

Drink on me matey when we get introduced at the ACE

bye all,

Midlife, you’re right, we set the tone, and I really don’t want to get involved with setting rules or enforcing them, I’d like to think this community can conduct itself with this need, and so far, it’s all going really well. BabyJ, I will be sorry to see you go, but I really don’t see what the problem is, so it’s choice, I just wish you wouldn’t do it mate!

Midlife, when I had a word, it wasn’t because someone casually posted some swearing, it was because they were directly rude to another member and their general attitude was one of taking the piss out of what we’ve built. I hope it’s the first, and last time I’ll have to do that.

Afraid that kids might see a naughty word… I picked my younger bro (aged 10) from school and learned 4 new insults from the kids in the playground while waiting for him.

To assume the little ‘bar-stewards’ are innocent is naive.

You shouldn’t be playing on the net at work, so bosses would have no reason to disipline you.

heheeh, how many friends did I lose with that little speech?

fun you! air-hole!

LOL
