had it second hand in June 05, with 4400 miles on the clock.
Now it has 13,580 miles.
For the last 7/8 weeks I have been commuting to work Mon to Friday, 44 mile round trip each day. At least sat or sun it gets let out for fun.
Ridden fairly hard I’d say.
In the last 2 months at most, I have got through prob 500 ml of engine oil, to the extent when I check the window, cant see any oil but oil light not on (unless I break very hard, which is when I noticed the oil usage for the first time).
Should I worry. I topped it up last week so will monitor it and see how it does.
I have an sv650 and had similar recently. It seems that as soon as the oil starts to run a little bit low it begins to drink it like fuel. I topped mine up to the correct level and its still OK, though it has drunk some and is now sitting on the low level. i am going to watch it and see if it starts drinking it again.
Half a litre of oil in 2000-3000 miles is not particularly bad oil consumption, but clearly you need to keep an eye on it. It is not a good idea to rely on the oil light, better to make sure it doesn’t fall below the minimum level on the window. Remember that oil provides cooling as well as lubrication so if the oil level drops the engine will tend to run hotter and burn more oil as a result.
If you are vigilant with checking the oil level and change the oil regularly you should get many tens of thousands of miles out of that engine, and the oil consumption will probably not get much worse.
A mechanic friend once saw a Kawasaki ZX-6 brought in for it’s first service with the owner saying that the oil light had just come on. They drained about a pint of oil from the engine. After some haggling the engine was replaced under warranty.
If I’ve seen this right have you not done an oil change for over 9000miles? I have an SV that I hammer (try to ) to and from work and in the weekends. I never have much oil usage as I change oil and filter every 3500-4000 miles. I know some people say that oil today is great and does not need changing like in the past. But its only about £35 for the change so well worth it IMO.
Maybe do an oil and filter change and watch how much it will use in the first 4000 miles?
