whats more fun guys? im sure you’ve had them both, i mainly do trackdays now but i fancy a supermoto for the road. what you think?
For fun per £’s, SM’s all the way. But that must surely depend where you’re gonna ride it. Around town, SM’s are unbeatable fun. On fast A-Roads and Duel Carriage Ways it could be awful depending on which SM you have. Old school cossers with big brakes and sticky tyres would suffer on the fast roads. The new Street-Motos would be better, but I suspect that they’d be less of a buzz if you like it old school. On a proper race track you’ll find the SM’s struggling until you get to the corners. Most SM trackdays are on Karting circuits. These tend to be just that bit too slow!
Sports bikes are too competent. Even at 3million mph you dont feel like its you making it all happen, you just find yourself backing off everywhere unless on the mototrways, and then your in jail by the end of the week. Do you want to buy my R1?![]()
SM’s are fun as hell and they have a greater road presence.
Also I’ve seen a supermoto get hit by a bus and only need £50 of repairs (new brake lever & foot pegs)
Supermoto all the way… You can thrash them, trash them, crash them and still continue to ride them
There great for tight twisty lanes, hitting jumps, going offroad, pulling wheelies…
But to be honest you’ve asked that question in the wrong section cause certainly from me its a biased answer and ive never owned a sportsbike… Ive always road motocross and supermoto
^^^^^ what he said:)
Supermoto. Clothes on or off, the most fun you can have.
thx for info guys, im very tempted to get my first Supermoto now but im only 5’4, would that be an issue for me? also what would you recommend for 3k
I’d say DRZ400sm
It’s not a proper track supermoto, more of a road supermoto.
Top speed is almost 100mph
3500 mile between services (most other sumos are far less)
Infinite amount of cheap spare parts
Very tune-able motor
you need both!
Moto on here aint the tallest fella in the world, ask him!
I personaly wouldnt go for the DRZ, you’d get bored quickly with the lack of power.
Id stay away from the purpose built road going supermoto’s too, they are heavier and less fun but admitedly are more geared towards general road use.
You can get any bike lowered, i had my 525 lowered 25mm to improve handling and also it helps with the fact im a short arse too.
There is a girl on The KTM Forum who is tinny and she has a 525 which has been lowered alot to suit her hight. If you get a KTM it is worth visiting the forum to ask for advice on lowering, would be worth getting on there before you get a bike.
You could pick up a few moto’s at that price. Im KTM all the way, so again i have a biased opinion as since i was 17 all ive had is KTM’s and have no major complaints about them at all.
I would certainly stick with the proper moto route if you want to get the full feel and enjoyment that a supermoto brings. A converted enduro/motocross bike is what makes a proper moto, or ofcourse you can buy a race supermoto(eg KTM 450SMR) and convert it for road use(fit lights basicaly).
I went from a blade to a DRZ and I have never had so much fun on a bike. It does run out of steam quite quickly but you have so much up to that point that it doesn’t really matter.
I will never have a sports bike on the road again:D:D
You forgot to mention that them track orientated supermotos require triple the servicing because of their highly strung engines & only hold 1 litre of oil.
Also KTM bikes have to go to a KTM mechanic for servicing.
When you buy a road-supermoto you buy a bike that has longevity in mind and less headache.
The DRZ can power wheelie, stoppie & give good lean angles. I personally dont need anything more than that.
Not a supermoto, but a cousin (Enduro), my DRZ 400 is MUCH more fun around town than my S1000RR superbike. Honestly, I need to get myself some SM wheels. I love the DRZ so much. For outside of London, the superbike comes alive and is in another world though.
I have the DRZ 400S and am about to put the SM wheels on it tomorrow. It really is a great bike around town. Lots of low down grunt, very flickable and so much fun ![]()
I love my bike so I’m biased but the MT-03 is bucketloads of fun and it can get a shift on when you want to. The torque is luverlllly and it handles extremely well. Had it for nearly 3 years now and IMO it’s still the ideal bike for what I do- city riding and the odd rideout to the twisties. Would only maybe go for a triple if I had to change bikes.
I think the MT-03 is about the perfect bike for city riding. Great machine, and great looks IMHO ![]()
True!
But if you can’t have both, you can always try a superbike that has a tiny bit of supermoto DNA http://motoride.sk/galeria/wpp/16316--KTM-990-SuperDuke.2.jpg

I wouldn’t swap my SD for a supermoto or anything else, but I’m pretty sure I’ll have a supermoto again at some point. I doubt I’ll ever have a sports bike though.
I dunno man.
From what I’ve head the MT03 seems to destroy bearings and that stock exhaust sound totally ruins the bikes image.
Hee hee… okay so my bearings were destroyed but I got them fixed and right as rain for very reasonable money in the end (thanks to FWR) so who cares?..and yes the stock exhaust sounds only okay but that’s why I’ve got the Akras.
Sometimes the shortcomings of a bike are actually the making of it and well you know, give it a bit of character. When all is said and done the important thing is what it rides like and this bike does the trick for me…but each to their own, eh?
