Thing is, for that price (looking at the guide price on that link), you can get a half decent second hand XT660 and that has the Yamaha backup.
The XT isn’t that great on fuel though (relatively speaking). Some people say they can get 60-70mpg from it, but I never manage more than 40-45.
I suspect the MZ will be worse on fuel as it’s carbed.
If you really want a cheap commute hack, I’d get a 125 scooter.
huh I think I decided to stay away from CCMs… seems to break apart, can’t have that on a commute bike.
My first choice was the KTM and the XTs but I can’t find anything under £2800 and going at £3000 I can get just about any bike.
Also seems the KMTs have higher insurance costs, all prices are fully comp on commute at 9000 miles.
XT is £266
KMT 625cc DUKE £320
ER-6N £250
BANDIT 600 £121
BANDIT 1200 £152
MZ MASTIFF £136
I had a look at some old 90’s 400cc the Honda and the GSXR 400… they go for between £500 and £1200 max. The MZ 660 is around the £1500, found one for £1800 with 9k miles on it.
You should be able to pick up a decent used XT660 for less than £2.5K.
They’re fuel injected, so include an immobiliser, so less risk of “drive-away” theft. Obviously that doesn’t stop them of being lifted, but I guess they offer more security than a carbed SM.
