Stupid driver doesn't know left from right

Going home yesterday afternoon I indicate to turn left from the Rochester Way (which is quite wide) in to a smaller side road.

I was positioned slightly to the right of the middle of the road.

Just as I was about to brake I see the car behind me start to accelerate and is going to undertake me.

I gave a short stare behind me and braked to a stop.

She did stop and hold her hand up to apologise.

This made me think.

Where should I be positioned in the road before I am going to turn?**

Question: if you saw a car positioned to the right of the middle of carrigeway with it left indicator on, and you were on your bike, what would you think or do?

I would say if you leave enough space for a car to do something stupid, they will.

well going by what you have said, I was taught that is correct if you are going into a small road you come out more not move in, otherwise this makes your job alot harder.

sounds like you did the right things as your mirror/lifesaver checks alerted you to the danger…maybe you were slightly too far right? but without seeing junction we cant comment on that?

but if you left enough space for a car to get underneath you then that was a seriously tight corner

i was taught in DAS to leave as little space as possible without actually riding in the gutter when turning left and if its a tight turn then take it slower or leave more space but be extra careful with your mirror checks and lifesaver

maybe any police riders/instructors could give their input? would like to know if thats right

I agree with the other posts. The car driver probably thought you had forgotten to cancel your indicator (we have all done that). Faced with the apparent contradiction between signal and positioning of your bike, she probably went on the positioning - I confess I might do the same.

I did my CBT a little while ago, and just started lessons and I’ve been told that if you’re turning left then you need to be on the left side of your lane without being in the gutter. Lets other people see where you’re going and stops anyone undertaking you.

That’s how I’ve been told to do it at any rate

exactly as I was taught…

Ride defensive, and as Captain Chaos says, if you give people the chance, they will do something very stupid.

Hear Hear

Treat every road user as an idiot and you won’t go wrong.

Thats right folks - Chaos rules!!!

Hah! He thinks he does…until Dudette gets home anyway :stuck_out_tongue:

If your turning left you should position yourself left side of your lane about where the passenger in a car would be.

I agree that if you leave enough room for a car/van to come up your inside then they will. I just hog the middle of the road and don’t worry about whats behind me so long as i can get round the corner without getting knocked off.

Something along the same lines happens to me quite a bit when commuting - I move out from the middle of my lane towards the centre line line to get a view ahead (to see if there’s any safe overtaking opportunity) and next thing I know some tw@ has almost mounted the kerb to get into my space in the lane

Thanks for all your comments. I will look it up in the books I bought before my DAS and see what it says.

That’s definitely what is taught if you’re driving a car, but after all a bike’s much more manoeuvrable (sp?) so you shouldn’t NEED to move out the whole width of a car, however narrow the road or however tight the turn. Trick is to slow down a bit more perhaps?
