Chippies, DIY-ers, handypersons… who has used a stud detector/sensor thing to locate studs in the plasterboard? I’ve read reviews for a couple of products and they say the cheap ones are crap, and so are the more expensive ones. Is it a complete waste of money?
I paid about 40 quid for one from B&Q and it seems to work pretty well. It allegedly does studs, pipes and electrical cables, and it’s been spot on every time for me so far.
I find that hammer drills find studs and pipes better than any detector money can buy.
I had to find an electric light cable that was live but plastered over, borrowed my mates detector and it worked perfectly. I would recommend investing in one as drilling into pipes is no joke never mind electric cables. Look for reviews of what is the best and then buy used on ebay 
I got my dewalt hammer drill for £25 and a dewalt cordless drill in its case well used but excellent working order for a score.
yep i have one handy for not drilling into the water pipes etc in the walls:P diy must have:D
the cheap ones can be a bit naff but any mid range one will work fine. worth getting a multi one that will detect cables, pipes, studs etc
Invaluable bit of kit for any DIY. The only fault i found with my one was THE MISSUS!!!
She didn’t read the screen properly & drilled about 6 holes into the living room wall completely missing the joists, only to discover it came straight out the other side in the bedroom & muggins here was the 1 who had to sort it out :doze:

Most women do not need an electronic device to detect a stud in my experience, luck that you were on hand to set her straight.
Technology simple, they work very well.
Stud detectors are often used at my place and the women have a 100% success rate (let’s not talk about the blokes though…).

Had one with a moisture probe, proved invaluable after positive stud detection.
Jetstream Surely if you’ve found the stud, the damp bits will follow, so the moisture detector is a bit of a waste of time?
Back to the original post. Don’t buy the Screwfix one. It’s “a bit vague”.
