Strange problem with the bike

Hi All

I’ve seen this problem posted on other forums but never seen anyone reply with a reliable fix. Was wondering if it rings any bells, or anyone has experienced the same…

I’ve got an Aprilia Pegaso 650 Strada. Same 660 single as used on the Yamahas. Electronic everything. Even the fuel mixture can be adjusted on the dash. This problem was happening with standard cans and still happening with after-market cans (baffle in).

So I set the idle at 1500 it runs great. After about a month the idle suddenly starts to reduce to the point at which the engine isn’t running as smoothly and then it starts to cut out when I pull the clutch in at traffic lights etc.

So then I adjust the idle with the idle screw back up to 1500 and everything is sweet again for another month or so… and it all starts again.

I have adjusted the mixture up (didn’t feel right) and adjusted it down when it has been running a bit better. The spark plug colour is OK.

But it’s still happening.

Any ideas appreciated…

You need to take it along to someone knowledgeable in such matters.

Hands on diagnostic is essential to get to the root cause of the problem. Inter webby guessing games and going down the this, that and the other hit and miss route may or may not, probably not, lead to a satisfactory cure.

The real question is ‘can anyone recommend someone knowledgeable in such matters’

Scorch is your man

Good point. Though I have a certain amount of lack of trust in my local dealer who may have the right kit and unfortunately my trusted service/repair man doesn’t have the kit.

If anyone has recommendations for a London or South London based Aprilia fixer please let me know. Apart from the one based in Croydon.

go to facebook and get in touch with the aprilia facebook page, i think its called ‘forza aprilia’ or something like that, surely someone would be able to help pointing you to the direction of a reliable mechanic.

assuming you have checked air filters as it looks like your bike is chocking itself up?

you could always go to the oval motorcycle centre and they’ll show you how to sort it?
It sounds like you can fix it yourself but you just need the knowledge on how to do it as opposed to someone doing it for you.

Might help to know their chief mechanic worked as an Aprillia mechanic in his last job. if you tell them the problem when you book it’d probably make it a lot quicker too.

All good advice. Yep, bike is clear and clean re oil, filters, fuel filter etc. Thank you gents.

Same happened to mine. I didn’t get to the root cause due to bigger fish to fry, but I suspected it was a richer mixture. These lads are quite knowledgeable here: http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?52-2006-Pegaso-Trail-Strada-Factory

Take it to a garage, sounds like there is a mixture issue.

If you’re adjusting the idle screw I’m assuming it’s carb and not injection, could be something as simple as a dirty carb.
