I have an ER5 I use for commuting, and sometimes have a problem with it starting, esp in the damp/wet. The starter ‘clicks’ as if it has a low battery, I have changed the battery and thats ok, and today I bought an ohm meter to check the starter relay and that seems ok, all the leads etc are tight and clean, any other suggestions - how do you check the starter?
prob easiest way to check is (when its doing it)
check battery voltage, you want to see something like 12.4v
check voltage on battery side of solenoid should be same
with starter button pressed in check voltage on other large terminal (to starter) should be very slightly lower
if you can get to it check voltage at starter terminal should be same as at solenoid, if you are getting a big drop in current, but its not turning, its the starter
OR
make sure bike is in NEUTRAL WITH CLUTCH IN cable tie the clutch lever back to be on safe side, turn ign on, and short the two large terminals on starter solenoid, this should make the starter turn
if it still clicks the starter is at fault, if it spins the starter motor the problem is in the solenoid
hope thats helpfull
i had this problem with my slingshot…click…click…click…all i bluddy heard…wound me right up it did…bought new batt…’‘click’’…serviced starter moter…’‘click’’…bought second hand solnoide…’‘vroom’’!!!
worked ever since…
hope this helps

hmmmm right thanks for that, will give it a shot on my next day off!
The clicking may not be coming from the starter solonoid. On Kawasaki The power comes from the starter switch to the junction box (usually black/red or black). In the junction box is a control relay that is part of the starter lock-out system, this then feeds power to the starter solonoid. If you have power getting to the solonoid and it has a good earth, try bridging the main terminals as suggest earlier. If the power is only getting as far as the junction box then fault could be with one of the starter lock-out components (clutch switch, side stand switch) or the junction box it’s self.
sh it its getting more n more complicated!
Check the charging system.
Download this http://www.electrosport.com/Images/fault_finding.pdf which is a step by step guide to checking a charging system. Then report back to us.
hmmm will give it a go!
any news yet?..im gagging to find out what the problem is…

seem to remember somewhere that kwakers suffer from side stand switch problems, but that was many many yrs ago.
bloody thing wudnt start this morn - got up 3am for work went to garage jumped on, hit the starter button, it started to turn over then clicked - bit like flat battery - tested battery (which is only about a month old) that was fine - but still put spare battery on (which was the old one), and it fired up straight away with no problems. I havent really looked at it properly will do that in couple weeks time - getting me cbr ready for track day at the mo woohoo.
I did click the kill button few times, and the side stand and clutch lever, but didnt seem to do anything.
Just as a matter of interest, have you checked the earth?
sounds like a classic bad earth problem.
