I have a wedding to go to abroad and have to fly from Stanstead at a crazy early hour of the morning.
Does anyone know how easy it is to park a motorbike there and if the airport has facilities for locking up my helmet and leathers so i can change at the terminal in advance of my flight (dont want to carry my gear to Sardinia and back for no reason)
Stansted Airport (BAA) - Free motorcycles parking in the dedicated zones (Zone D of the Long Stay Car Park).(Updated 15 Aug 06) When entering the long stay car park, use the coach lane where the barrier is shorter so that you can pass without having to open the barrier. Go past the bus stop then go to where the coaches are parked in Zone D ignoring the closed sign and park with the other motorcycles. Then go back to the bus stop and press the help line to get a bus to pick you up (They do not normally stop at this bus stop). (Updated 05 Aug 05) There is also short-stay motorcycle parking (which is in the open). This is located in Zone D of the short stay car park - Follow signs for arrivals, use the push button to collect a ticket (only to raise the barrier) and follow signs to Zone D. Park with all the other bikes in designated zone and you are right at the entrance to the terminal underpass (i.e. 1 minute’s walk from the terminal). (Updated 03 Oct 06)
HTH. There’s probalby something on the stansted website as well.
Parking for bikes is pretty good at airports, the only thing is that locking up your helmet, etc can be rather expensive (about £4-6 a day, which builds up!) as you have to put it in left luggage…
It’s a bit of a problem (leaving your gear) isn’t it.
I manage to get jacket, trousers, boots and helmet in my top box/under the seat, but you always worry whether it’ll be there when you get back.
Flying from H’row and City recently, I saw a lot of people who’d chained their helmets to their bikes, but there’s no way I’d want to risk my head and my expensive helmet in that way.
I suppose there are those metal “net” things that you can lock to your bike and lock your gear inside. Has anyone tried one?
I left my bike at Standstead for 5/6 days recently. Been in the Zone D long stay before, saves you about £45 in parking so no complaints.
I didn’t want to carry gear with me so I went in jeans and jacket. Left my lid and gloves on the bike then covered all with an Oxford Storm cover. Chained the bike and also have a small bicycle style cable lock that just about wraps around the middle of the bike, over the seat and stops anyone taking the cover off. Cover keeps the rain off the bike, keeps your lid dry and no one can see what is under there. Think it is quite safe there anyway as there is 24hr cctv.
Oh yeah, big delays on M25 going there, backed up for miles. I’d have been bricking it in the car but sailed through on the moto. Sorted.
