Speedo

Do’s anyone know if a speedo is required by law on a motorbike ? (not swimwear before you start :D)

Yes, it is required by law.

Why’s that then? Yours broke?

Na I just fitted flat bars on me bl*de and the original speedo is mounted in a big housing and clutters the front.Few of me fighter mates have said it’s not a legal requirement…fort I’d double check

I see! Ya, speedo = must, rev counter = optional.

Unless its a really really old vehicle from back when they didn’t have one.

So I was told a while ago, a speedo is a legal requirement. There’s not as far as I’m aware any particular specs that the speedo has to meet, so it doesn’t even need to be backlit.

Theoretically you could use one of them tiny push bike speedo things and it should still be legal. It doesn’t have to be a working speedo either for the MOT

yep thats what i heard too about the bike speedo…as long as it has one its okay i think…

Cheers for the replys

I had a wireless p/bike speedo on me fighter and it use to get a bit confussed once up to about 50mph, I’ll stick one of em on it to keep the boy’s in blue happy

Didn’t get confused often though, did it?

I’ll see you tonight w a n k e r :D:P:)

No speeding

A speedo is NOT a legal requirement! Try going to an MOT without one. One garage BROKE my speedo whilst replacing the wheel bearings on an MOT of mine, told me about it and passed the bike regardless.

It’s breaking the speed limit you need to worry about: not having a speedo in front of you. I know someone on a guzzi who rides on engine noise alone. I rode with a GPS mounted when my speedo was broke.

when i last got my scoot MOT’d teh speedo wasnt working, i phoned up my usual place and they said i didnt need one…

its still aint working!..speed cameras are a pain without one…can be done tho!-sloooows down to walking pace…really annoys the car drivers:P

I think this is one of those weird grey areas, you dont require a speedo (what I heard from a bike copper) but you do require a means of measuring your movement for legal reasons, miles per year etc.
