Speed cameras M25

Got the replacement bike last week.

How many peeps do the M25 congestion control cameras criminalise? There are so many in a row near heathrow, could you loose your licence from the first to the last-totting up?

Travelling from the Reigate area and going clockwise past Heathrow there are the congestion controlled signs that designate the fluctuating speed dictated to drive at the time.

Ie it can change to 50, 40, 60 etc to control the flow of traffic and congestion so far as I can gather.

Speed controlled motorway in this way was all new to me as a congestion measure… New road, new route.

Went under the first one at 10mph over the designated speed, suddenly noticed the lines on the road, but by then had passed the lines, new bike and all, a bit rigid getting to know the bike, so by time I felt confident I was nicely planted to bend down and have a look in the mirrors to the overhead gantry I had passed by, I did notice the camera behind the road sign on the overhead gantry prior to the speed camera road markings. I was not sure whether the camera had flashed or not.

Any ideas on these cameras and their activities?

They used to only be activated when there was a temporary speed restriction, however i heard a while back that they were switching to digital and possibly going to be on all the time.

If you were 10mph over the limit, i hardly think it would have caught ya, theyre usually set a wee bit over the limit, plus your speedo is never accurate anyway

I must add it was only under the first gantry sign then I “learnt”.

I had a look yesterday as I was passing under the gantries. The ones that I had a look at with lines do not appear to have cameras on them. It’s all a bit confusing.

Personally I wish they would just scrap all these cameras and actually have the Police, police the road.

The cameras are activated when they use the “traffic calming speed reduction”, however not all the signs have cameras attached. Be careful though they recently put new cameras in near Chertsy behind a sign that didn’t use to have one.

Be careful there -bin caught twice in the last 2 years.

My experience is that the variable speed limit on the west side does a huge amount of good. There used to be solid gridlock nearly 24 hours a day whilst now it does tend to flow at 50mph+ most of the time. I can’t see how you could police that with coppers the old fashioned way.As for enforcement - not all gantries ever had cameras on them, even those that do they are not always operational - they are being replaced with new digital ones, they can only enforce avariable speed limit after it has been in force for several seconds to give drivers a chance to safely slow down, and they can’t enforce the national speed limit with an automated system without specific signs going up.

There is also an issue about whether it is safe to enforce the 70mph national speed limit using automated systems. Studies suggest it would cause a lot of high speed collisions as speeding vehicles panic break when they see the marks on the road etc. The main cause of motorway accidents is vehicles suddenly slowing down for one reason or another. the variable speed limit system is designed to gradually slow traffic for this reason.

go 2 jail. do not pass go, do not collect £200

its a case of getting to know which have the cams on them, look at the opposite side of M25 if that gantry aint got them the one your side generally hasn’t, still take care though as thats not set in stone

gissa go on the 6
