That is some astonishing footage! And as you say with the improvements to driver safety he is alive. Think the safety improvements came not from Max Mosley (he who likes weird nazi spanking sessions), but more from the F1 Driver association that was set up in the wake of Senna and Ratzenburger deaths at the Italian GP which forced through changes to safety.
