Some muppets tried to nick my bike, they carried it (both discs locked) about 20ft, smashed the ignition barrel, and tried to pull off my immobiliser, to finish things off, they dropped it - somehow blew a fork seal (tho that could have been me and the speed humps!) warped a disc… and broke a mirror… nothing terminal - and with it being an old bike, I’m reluctant to go through the insurance (£300 excess, if it’s a write-off, I get that covered by excess insurance) - as I think I can repair it myself for less than that.
Bike breakers:
Front Brake Lever
Front Right ‘handle’ (name, anyone?.. I wanna say ‘clip on’)
Mirror
New Disc
I figure that lot comes to under £100, I can live without an immobiliser, how would I go about removing it ?
I tried to repair what looked like a copper induction jobbie (round the ignition barrel) that the immobiliser wires went too, and where the transponder has to sit - but no-go, so I figure, I should be able to remove it… i can chase the wires back to what looks like part of the ECU under the rear fairing… but, I don’t wanna make matters worse… it’s just the fecking immobiliser
Also, from the breakers yard, I wanna get a new set of locks (mine still work, but they’re damaged) does anyone know from experience what that’s likely to cost ?
Also, another option, is - before I touch anything else… can I get the insurance company to send an assessor without filing a claim ?
there’s a breakers near by, they have 3 of my bike in, right year, right model to scavenge parts for - but I could just use advice on taking off the Immobiliser, so I can ride it over there to get the bits
yeah, it was a group of kids with a perchant for stealing bikes and cars, local kids ( one 17yr old and 3/4 13/14yr olds )
Myself, and 3 residents called the police a total of 5 times, they didn’t show… after they came to see the scene, they didn’t collect any evidence, and told me that they wouldn’t do anything about it.
Hambley, I am with JT on this. If you call the Insurer and get them to send an assessor - if they say sorry the bike is beyond repair you know it willl still be marked against you. The Proposal Form for an insurance Policy still states “have there been any accidents, losses or thefts whether fault or not”. So even if you choose not to claim they store the info!!
Unless you are planning to claim suggest you just get it along to a garage for a looksie. Have you got AA or RAC - call them out for assistance - you may need to push the bike a mile from home if you have Home Start!
thanks all for the reply, with the exception of the immobiliser, there’s nothing I can’t fix (or haven’t fixed before!!) but - that’s the only problem - I was hoping Charlie, or one of the other bike techs on here could give ma a clue on installing it… it’s a Taurus, something or other.
With what you’ve all said in mind, I won’t take it through the insurance, I’m only 21, and only took out the policy 3 weeks ago - so it would look really, really nasty on my insurance history!
Sounds like the nail on the head Charly, that’s what I thought it was, I put it back together, but i’m not sure how the copper reel relates to the two broken wires that were left sticking out from behind the yolk.
Would you happen to know, if I can remove the immobiliser (or is it really, really tied into the electrics) … secondly, short of telling my insurance company I’ve taken it out… should it be a simple enough task ?
Are you sure it’s not anything else that’s stopping the bike from starting?
Is the Immobiliser factory standard (as it in it comes with the bike)?
The best bet is a Haynes manual but if the immobiliser is anything like the one that is built into modern bikes, you’ll need a new ECU and keys programmed for that ECU.
Where is your red master key?
I didn’t think bikes from that era had factory immobilisers fitted…That’s pretty advanced for the time.
it’s an after market job, there is no Master key/etc… it’s just a little transponder, and that copper loop, other than that, no - nothign damaged
The kids pulled this wire, and they’d twisted hem together, dunno if they thought it was jump started or what… but it’s an old bike, standard key (I could have any lock smith cut another) and I’m 90% sure it should just unplug… what is it that Immobilisers do that stop it starting… ?
Sorry I missed a bit of the convo…Get a wiring diagram of the bike and that will tell you what wires need to be disconnected to remove the immobiliser.
Charly - If I link the positive/negative wires from the immobiliser then it still doesn’t start, I figure those wires interface with that copper spool somehow, and the transponder on my key ring signals it somehow…
Parts wise Vegas - I got all the hardware stuff covered, but - thanks - once I get this running again, it’s new-bike time… something nice like an R6 perhaps (nudge, nudge Eugene!)
Where might I get a wiring diagram, Haynes or something ?
