It’s a bit early to be booking, given the time of year and dodgy weather, but it’s selling quicker than others due to the free ticket.
Sunday 12th March on the full GP circuit at Silverstone for £99. Throw in a free ticket to the Silverstone round of World Superbikes and it’s a very decent price. Especially when you consider that the date after this one (3rd April) costs £135 alone.
I’m booked in and there are 21 places left, according to their site.
I might do this i have never done a track day and am seriously considering it! Any tips?? Good idea to do my first at silverstone? insurance??/ leathers???
Weather was ace when I did Sliverstone on the 4th - we had a great time and it seriously isn’t cold when your out on track. And nice heated cafe when your waiting.
In regards of doing a first trackday at this track - as Focused say in the briefing - THIS IS A VERY FAST TRACK AND IF YOU COME OFF YOU WILL BE HURT! Maybe a bit overdramatic, but not without truth.
How good a rider are you. To a certain extent - its possible for it to be somewhat worse if your a good fast road rider (gfrr). I’ve seen it more than once where a gfrr takes to the track - and after a session or two starts thinking:
" Hey this isn’t hard at all, no traffic, manhole covers, oncoming traffic etc. and I’m faster then quite a few ( more nervous riders ) in the novice group "
They then up the pace. Then lose focus ( thats why its called Focused! ) thinking how great this all is , and then misjudge going in, grab a handful, and wallop - they’re bouncing down the track heading for the kitty litter - watching their pride and joy getting ground away as it slides down the tarmac. And this all happens at double time. Also going with a group of people you ’ sort of know ’ may not be to good idea - better with someone you know and trust - easy to get sucked in to the bravado as someone tells how they were gringind their pegs as they overtook a couple of ACU boys on the outside at Priory.
Not being negative here - as its a blast - but unless your REALLY sure of your self control - I would NOT recommend* S/Stone GP as your first time. Thats a lot of track to learn while at the same time learning what a trackday is all about. A good one is Snetterton - enough there to keep you well busy as you learn it - a VERY fast straight etc - easy to see where you supposed to go ( Silver can be a bit confusing ).
And do wear a yello first timers jacket - lets faster riders expect the unexpected when passing you - and give you extra room.
And well worth getting an instructor go around with you to show you some lines ( they’re free!!! ) - say in a session after lunch once you’ve loosened up a bit and got into the swing of it.
And it IS tiring - keep an eye on fatigue - most offs happen in the last couple of sessions.
Here’s a visual aid to show just how much there is to learn on S/Stone GP :
I’m not saying don’t do it - just not the one I’d recommend.
J-Man, I know what you mean regarding novice, but one big advantage of Silverstone is the width of the track and run - there’s loads of it! Many people overcook it going into turn one, but you can just sit up and keep going and then rejoing the track (as there’s no gravel or grass there).
Nice map too, but slightly out of date (missing the crappy little chicane where Luffield is).
Yeah - why’d they put that in - I ****ing hate it!!!
True - it is wide, but Snetts pretty wide. Just think SS is a lot to take in on your first - and apart from any dangers, its nice to have a good time and feel yourself progress as you learn the course - bit hard at SS coz theres so much to learn - specially when your wondering where you mirrors are and whether you turned your indicator off!!
Yeah, agree there, that chicane is a right b*stard! Apparently none of the racers like (probably because they crash there). I’d love a go round Luffield, it looks like it could be the best corner on the whole circuit. I think the reason they did it though was to keep speed down at the end of the start finished straight - if you came round Luffield you’d be seriously shifting by the end of the straight, and enough people crash there as it is!
Never done Snetterton, as it’s a bit outside the distance I can be arsed to travel!
