Shouldn't have gone to Specsavers (for earplugs)

My old custom made earplugs need replacing and after a bit of googling I see many of the custom made suppliers tell you to go to high street shops to have the impressions made.

I’ve never had any dealings with Specsavers before - I’ve gone to my local independent optician for my glasses’ needs for years - and I would normally stay miles away from nationwide corporations like Specsavers but several of the custom made suppliers point to them for impressions, so off I went.

I was impressed with the audiologist’s knowledge of the products and she was very professional in taking the impressions, she was certainly quick in taking payment but after that there was silence; not silence because of earplugs working beautifully well, just silence; they took the money and forgot about me.

What I’ve learnt is Specsavers subcontract hearing work to free-lance audiologists who only visit once a week, that subcontractor in turn subcontracts the fabrication to someone else. Chasing up where my order has gone has turned into a marathon of ‘I’ll get her to call you’, ‘Oh, she’s on leave’ blah blah. Specsavers take no responsibility, nor even interest, in how their audiologist has performed, or not performed. The last time I actually managed to get her on the phone she sort of admitted there were payment problems with the supplier. I suspect supply has dried up due to lack of payment.

I’ve no doubt they’ll supply me with these earplugs eventually but if you are in the market for some custom made ones, I couldn’t recommend Specsavers.

I get mine via NHS as I’m properly hard of hearing. They take circa 3-4 weeks for turn around and are usually fairly good. I’ve had to had repeat impressions because they messed up making the mould.

I got mine done by some guys at the Excel show. Properly impressed with it from beginning to end. The plugs themselves are awesome…
