ok this should probably be in another forum but wanted to see peoples general emphasis on service history.
if you were looking at buying a bike with lots of service history and it had alot of work carried out over the service history how would you look at it.
Either:-
Wow this bikes had alot of work done on it so going to cause me problems
or:-
cool he has had all that done so I should not need any work doing on it.
I would say it depends - for example, I bought a three year old high mileage car that had a service history that included every bulb that had been replaced etc. I concluded that although there were a few electrical items there was nothing to suggest a major electrical problem. The biggest item was a central locking servo. All the things like cam bets, oil changes etc had been done as required etc. The conclusion I came to was that it was just well looked after and well documented. Eight years on I still have the car and it is still very relaible despite having nearly double the mileage it had then. Other than normal wear and tear the only issue has been another locking servo that was replaced under dealer warranty. It looks like water gets into the doors but the locks have bene fine for the last four years.
If on the other hand the work suggested repair of poor maintentance, or a continual fault such as regular electrical items blowing etc then it might be different.
many thanks this was the kind answer I was looking for… yes the bike I’m looking at has very good service history and nothing is regularly turning up so would put it down to well looked after then.
I do a fair few miles & my bikes regularly serviced & I get the book stamped in the hope that when I come to sell it the prospective buyer would appreciate the fact knowing I’ve looked after it & not skipped service intervals etc
Sort of agree but I would rather see receipts than stamps as i know for a fact that stamped up service books are easily obtainable from the right (or wrong) sources and mean very little.
Aint that the truth! I traded in a bike a couple of years ago and told the dealer that I’d serviced the bike myself as I was a mechanic. He went on to tell me that it wasn’t a problem and he’d just get the book stamped up before he sold the bike on
Needless to say I won’t be buying any second hand bikes from them!
