Got a PACE handbook in your car? Can I borrow it?

Dont worrry one day you’ll be a man a learn how to conduct yourself as one , till then you keep holding onto your childhood with a firm grasp an dont let anyone try an take it from you even if this means kicking screaming an stamping your feet just my opinion

I don’t need one, been using Pace since before you were born.
You can man up and apologise for your behaviour or you can carry on acting in this juvenile way ?

I’m not interested in getting into a flame war about whether police are pigs or not, personally I don’t think they are, but that’s not the thing that interests me about the way this thread has turned.

What interests me is the comment “This is the internet”. I spent/spend a lot of time thinking, writing and talking about how we interact with technology, so this right up my street.

The other night I made the comment to a friend that people behave differently online than they would in person. And I just wonder why that is the case. I think a lot about what’s acceptable and what’s not acceptable behaviour on the internet. I mean, even boxing rings have acceptable standards of behaviour, and when people do something unacceptable (like bite an ear), there’s uproar. But that doesn’t seem to happen much on the internet. Don’t get me wrong – no one’s stopping anyone from having an opinion, but equally, no one’s stopping anyone from thinking either.

Sometimes it seems like the internet is just a free-for-all, a place completely devoid of civility. Maybe Marx and Heidegger were right? (I hope not.) Maybe technology like the internet does alienate us from our humanity. I try to think very positively about the internet; I love it and I hate it. I think it’s amazing for art, for instance, and for expanding one’s horizons or even meeting people I would normally never have a chance to meet.

The flip side of that is that it can sometimes feel like people are just pixels, and maybe that’s what make people think it’s OK to treat each other in a way they never would if they were face to face, because it’s just a bunch of pixels and it’s the internet you can say whatever you like.

That works both ways, anyone can spurt out as much hate and vitriol as they like into the void of unfeeling, unthinking pixels; and they can also express their darkest secrets, expose their deepest wounds without really realising that anyone/everyone in the world is watching. (And it really could be anyone in the world; if you get a chance, check this out at the Science Museum http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/galleries/listening_post.aspx )

I’m beginning to think that we do both of those things because we just want someone to care about our opinions or feelings or just us. The internet is great for lots of things, but maybe the way we use it isn’t the best way to fulfil that need or desire. At least, not yet.

I probably haven’t made any friends writing this f***ing tome of a post on a bike forum, but I’m cool with that.

Oh no another one on day realease from the maudsley hospital lol :stuck_out_tongue:

your my mate bitchbaby;)

good post…

smiled.

Most forums are faceless you hardly meet 0.1% of the members.
LB is different I’ve meet 100+ members over the years so yes it can be heated at times in posts but theres a very good chance I would meet said member which makes it more of a community than forum.

I actually found this interesting. I have often wondered myself how someone can behave differently online as opposed to in person. I can’t forget that when I interact on here that the person I am posting to is a real person and not, as you describe, a jumble of pixels. Maybe I’m just too nice for forums.
I have my opinions on why people do this but I’ll keep them to myself to save me upsetting anyone.

This thread was funnier when the title made no sense…

I can’t forget either, but it seems that people do. That’s why I’m so intrigued by the comment “This is the internet”, like that should make any difference whatsoever? Yet, it appears it does.

You can’t get slapped on the internet.
