Scorch's tour of Yorkshire.

Day 1
A trundle up the A1 to York, I set off an hour after Mrs scorch (she took the car) and I arrived an hour before she did :hehe:. Just short of three hours including a tea stop. Beautiful weather, bike behaving itself for once

Flushed with enthusiasm I dragged Mrs S. out for an evening blast up the A166 from York to Bridlington. Unfortunately I can’t provide pictures, but it is a fantastic trip. They look after bikers in Yorkshire. Speed camera signs every 400 yards, but no speed cameras. I can remember as a kid that the road was infamous for fatalities, and they know that bikers will be bikers whatever the deterrent, so the roads are wide, the surface is free of lumps and bumps, and the long sweeping curves are well coated with shell grit. The corners are also well signposted, and to increase safety they have been constructed to allow the drivers/bikers to see round them. Aside from a few hairpins, no blind bends.
The journey back was less entertaining; we left it too late and came back in the dark. The bugs and moths were as thick as snow, and I had to keep twisting my helmet back and forth to get a decent view through the splats. In addition, the temporary repair to my jacket zip failed (Despite posting it some time before my trip, your slider didn’t arrive in time Waspy, Royal mail…grumble grumble, at least it will be there when I get back… ). Fortunately I was carrying some insulting tape, so I span like a whirling dervish on the garage forecourt, while Mrs S unwound half a roll of black tape round me to keep the jacket closed.

Day 2
Popped into Malton to get some new rubber as the front tyre was showing a distinct lack of legal tread. Michelin road pilots, 160 quid fitted. I also managed to find a compatible zip slider in a camping supplies shop. It’s been hot during the day, but it gets chilly after 8pm, and I was in serious danger of getting chilblains round the nipple region.
Then a solo trip down my favourite road, the A169 from Pickering to Whitby. On the way out, I caught up with a couple of bikers, so tagged behind them for the duration. I’ve followed faster, but then I know that road really well. Fish and chips in Whitby. Don’t bother with the famous ones like Trenchers fish bar and The Magpie, they all went down hill when they gained popularity. Royal Fisheries in Baxter Street do a marvelous bit of battered cod and chips
The journey back to York was fantastic. I took photos, but to be honest its hard to beat the one I found on line. This is my favourite corner, bit iffy tipping it in on the way down, but coming back up tested the edge of my new tyres
Again, this is a famous bikers road, so every corner was shell gritted and the general condition of the road was fantastic. I don’t trust the new boots enough to give them the full beans, but it does seem to have stopped my front end drifting. Happy days.
I met a golf gti driver on the A64 back to York, who seemed convinced that he could outrun a Triumph Daytona…:doze: He kept me entertained for the last 10 miles or so

Day 3
A171, Scarborough to Guisborough. Never done this in its entirety. Again, I took pictures, but my phone can’t compete with the photos available on line:

It’s a fair old run, but well worth the effort. Bit congested with holiday traffic, but I adopted the ‘Alba Method’, and left them honking furiously in my wake. Tyres scrubbed in now, all bar half an inch or so. I have to say I didn’t think I would find them as sticky as the Battlax 021’s, but they haven’t let me down yet. Hooked up with a ktm for a while. I think he must have bought the slower model, he wasn’t nearly as hard to keep up with as NumNum. Bike still running beautifully, I’m thinking of writing to Triumph to let them know. Can’t be often they get positive feedback…

Day 4
Mrs S, being of an artistic bent, dragged me to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. She wants to go back tomorrow, as do I, because there is a couple of routes near Wakefield that I fancy having a go at while she gazes at lumps of scrap iron set against the backdrop of a beautiful country park.

PS: if anyone knows how to insert pictures in text, rather than have them all appear at the end, Ill be glad to hear it…

mmmm some delicious looking roads there buddy!

This should have been titled … Scorch rubs everyones nose in it :stuck_out_tongue: It does look good though . I hope you will bring enough chips back for everyone !!

It won’t last, it’s a Triumph after all…
Perhaps I should treat this as a reconnaissance mission, with a view to arranging a group trip. To be honest, you could put a pin in a map up here and hit a blinding route. I did most of them on a push bike before I was old enough to own a bike with an engine in…
It’s only a couple of hundred miles from the smoke, well within the range of a Jetstream rideout…

I’m like the proverbial pig in shite m8.

Jetstreams would do that just for a pint of milk

It’s funny cos it’s true…

You can only do this if you upload them onto a hosting site (say photobucket) and then link them in the post… You can put the link where you want

Alba tells me she’s coming up here next week, I’ve warned as many people as I can…

hi scorch? are you from my neck of the woods? I am from teesside!

those roads make me cry…they’re exactly as i remember them!

yeah i’ll definitively pay them a visit unless the weather turns for the worse

ps. how did you like your new tires?

Scorch,

Them roads look wicked, I may pop up there some time!

Frank

Day 5

Felt a little delicate this morning after necking a few gin and tonics last night, so we headed for Pickering again for a monumental breakfast to aid recovery. One Gutbuster and several cups of tea later I felt human again, and being so close to the A169, it seemed rude not to ride it again, so we flew over the moors to the coast. Sandsend this time, a tiny bay just North of Whitby. Spent most of the afternoon laid on the cliff top doing the crossword and drinking more tea.
We headed back the long way round, North up the A171 to Guisborough then Middlesborough. Sutton Bank was madness (pic of the hairpin thanks to google street view) I’ve never been on that bit of road with a bike, but I can highly recommend it. A quick dash down the A19 back to York in time for dinner.
I’m trying to talk Mrs S into a trip to Cumbria tomorrow… Depends largely on the weather, but I’m hoping for a dash up the A1, then the long run down the twisty A66 to Keswick. I used to go walking around the Lakes two or three times a year, and while the roads aren’t particularly high speed, the backdrop is stunning. I’m thinking breakfast in Keswick, followed by a trundle over to Glenridding and a trip on the steamer across Ullswater for tea and scones in Pooley Bridge…
Perhaps a trip to Helmsley for the weekly bike meet on Sunday, it’s not far from here, and the market square is filled with bikers every weekend.
Bike is miraculously still running well. I have a minor issue with an occasional low idle when I come to a stop after a long stretch, it has to have a bit of thinking time before it pulls it up to normal again. I think its a result of disabling the 02 sensor. I’m also starting to feel as though the second hand throttle bodies I fitted could do with balancing, idle air screws adjusting etc. Might even get them done up here.

Clogge; My Grandparents came from Gateshead, my parents came from Middlesborough, so I know the area quite well. I grew up in Yorkshire, halfway between Scarborough and York. A belated welcome to LB

SilveR6; I hope the weather holds for you  I am starting to trust the tyres now, they look as though they are a harder compound than the Battleax and they’re not scuffing up the same way, but they haven’t let me down yet.

Frank; You really ought to get up here, you would have a field day. It’s only a couple of hours ride, accommodation is cheap, and you can set off in virtually any direction and find glorious biking roads, seriously. I have seen less than a dozen speed cameras while Ive been here, and they have been in villages. There was a mobile camera on top of the moor road, but you could see the van clearly from 5 miles away, and besides, a stream of cars and bikes coming the other way had flashed us to let us know. Ditto police cars, don’t think I’ve seen one all week.

PS: I know SilveR6 gets about a bit :stuck_out_tongue: , so she knows this area already, but if any other LB’ers find themselves lucky enough to spend some time up here, Ill happily provide a detailed description of the routes for Satnav use.

I’ve slid down that hill in an artic, got quite scarey:laugh:

That photo doesn’t do the hill justice, I’m not sure Id like to slide down it on a sledge, let alone an artic…

no worries lb friends… i can give you a personal tour of the roads around here… will bring some teessidebikers along for the ride too! you won’t regret it… i feel so fortunate to have so many great roads on the doorstep!

Sounds good need to plan a visit ‘up north’

today we did… stockon on tees - richmond (archers ice cream) - reeth - hawes (wensleydale cheese factory) -wensley (1940s weekend) - leyburn (got kicked out of posh pub, so had to find lunch elsewhere) - manor cafe - yarm - stockton on tees… will try to post map, if i figure out how!

aka… " the north yorkshire dales / buttertubs route"… luvely!!!
