s*dding oil filters

did the oil change today and had another full on fight with the oil filter. sodding thing took ages to get removed.

tried one of those chain-type jobbies to get purchase on it but it mostly just deformed the filter. ended up just being another screwdriver butchering event - have to admit getting that nervous feeling that it wasn’t going to come off at all!!

is it just that they’re awkward to get on sports bikes, a git in general or am i just cack-handed?

Have you got an oil filter hex cap? You can stick a socket wrench on it and get the tightest filters off in a jiffy.

have you tried using the cup type filter tools? they are available to fit all filters, when you install the filter follow the instructions as they change from make to make, some want you to go hand tight + 1/4 turn some hand tight +2 turns etc, if all else fails then you can put a couple of self tappers threw the cup tool into the filter.

oops just seen someone beat me to it

Always buy K&N filters they come with hex nut attached  cost about £2 more than regular one and apparently offer better filtering

Depends on where your filter is located I suppose. Some of them are impossible to fit those cap tools on.

it was clearly put on too tight last time

Smashing the bejezus out a filter with a screwdriver and a big 'ammer is one of life’s pleasures;)

Did you remember to oil up the O ring before putting the new one on Ben?

yep, oiled up the new bad boy before insertion ;)had the same issue last time when my mate helped me (who is considerably better with bikes than i am) and the new one was fitted just hand tight again

might have to get one of those hex caps - noticed that the new filter has faces to accept one but dont think the old one did. where can i get one?

looked at the K&N ones before but heard there were warranty issues. bike is getting to/out of warranty by now to might get those next time

+1

your cack handed mate

as cm said smear the new filters o ring BUT only hand tighten the filter, it"ll self seal with expansion

I’ve always only done them up hand tight so I reckon it was put on too tight too.

YMMV

…or just to make life amusing, self loosten some times.

At least one boot is well waterproofed if that happens.

I work on nip up (one) hand tight and then add a quarter turn. Only use the wrench to get the fuggers off.

Thats the trouble with blokes that hang around the gym all day, just don’t know their own strength;)

Hang around outside debating whether to go in…Nah

its was put on to tight… :stuck_out_tongue:
