We had vicious storms here in Kansas overnight…no tornados, thankfully…but damaging winds and hail. I got up to go to work this morning and realized I would have to drive into this mess. I made it most of the way to work before I encountered hail…thankfully, not far from a highway overpass. I parked underneath the bridge for about 20 minutes while the hail passed over…big hail…golfball sized…it would have damaged my car A LOT had I not been fortunate enough to be under the bridge.
Crap quality pics from my cell phone…but you get the idea.
Yeah…it was raining so hard I couldn’t see the end of my hood and that hail was BIG…it would have been disasterous to have been caught out on my bike in something like that.
Crazy stuff Greg, good job you weren’t on the bike, that would’ve sucked big time. So, no frogs or cats and dogs falling from the sky? Those shots make it look like aliens are invading or something…
You and Jay should come over…I’ll take you both out “storm chasing”…
Hell, I’ll even loan you guys my 750 and borrow a friend of mines TL-R while you are here…we’ll go cook the Flint Hills Scenic Byway or something. (HOPEFULLY not at the same time we’re “storm chasing”, that is. LOL My big fear is to be caught out in the middle of rural Kansas in a big storm like that. They often blow up fairly quickly.)
Jay - No cats or dogs…just huge chunks of ice that make a sickening sound when they fall from 20,000+ feet in the sky and land on your car. It DOES feel pretty oppressive when I storm like that is over you…a reminder of how small you are compared to the forces of nature, I guess?
Wow…apparently that storm was more damaging than I thought.
Storm chasing, let me think the roads out in the states are largely straight and what you need is comfortable top end speed, only one thing for it, its blackbird time:
What a crazy drive home!! I drove right into a storm containing 3 possible tornados (I was listening to the storm trackers and weathermen on local radio as I was attempting to drive the 25 miles back to my house)…I couldn’t see a thing with the torrential rain and hail. I got home and went straight to the basement to take shelter. It has all blown over to my north and east now…what a pain in the arse.
