Riding down steep hill and bars shaking

What is it about riding down a steep hill that makes it feel unstable ? I don’t think it’s the bike, it’s me, is it just a balance thing or is there a technical reason why steep downhills are difficult ? Lack of confidence ? I would have thought braking would be improved because of the weight transfer to the front but it doesn’t feel like that.

Also had a little shake from the bars today, max acceleration, changed into second at 15k rpm or so and the bars waggled a bit ! I thnk the front may have lifted very slightly. I’ve been recommended to get a steering damper, I guess this might stop the waggle turning into something more serious ? This happened on the new section of the A10, straight, flat and very good surface.

Haven’t had the suspension set up yet, didn’t seem much point given my limited experience and skill but would that help too ?

Maybe there is a lot more weight being transferred to the front of the bike and puting extra strain on the steering bearings/column ? Complete guess though… have you tried using more of the rear brake and engine braking to slow you down ?

Down hill you’ve got almost all the weight on the front wheel. Try to hold onto the tank tight with your knees so you do not push all your upper body weight through your arms and onto the bars. That way they can turn more freely. DON’T use back brake. The wheel has almost all the weight off it and will start sliding when it locks. Trust me I’ve been there done that.

The bars do waggle a bit under hard acceleration, its normal. It is not a tank slapper as such. You’ll know about that when it happens

My bike without a steering damper is like a ride on a train about to derail.

+1 on keeping weight off the bars.

Also check your steering head bearings just in case.

Thanks, I wasn’t adjusting my position, I’ll try again and see how it feels, the bike is new so the bearings should be quite tight, it was more the balance didn’t feel right, probably just because I’ve not experienced it before.

I think I’ll get the suspension set up too, B said that would help with the bars shaking. I’m quite tall and about 95Kg so maybe not what the bike is set up for from the factory.

A brand new bike and you are changing up at 15,000rpm…Respect
