Does one have to send the licence away to be replaced after two year so that the <25kw can be erased?

You can - but don’t have to!!
If a restriction has a date by it, it expires and the restriction no longer applies.
If you want the restriction physically removed you can send it to DVLA for them to remove, but you don’t have to - but AFAIK it is free.
The date next to it is my 70th Birthday.
Thats how long your restriction is for then!!
Its automatically changed - but you can send it back for change to be done if you want to!!

If you send your license to the DVLA take a copy of it beofre you post it as there are still cases of people sending their licence for an update and it coming back without the entitlement - its then up to you to prove you had the entitlement…

That IS correct…you DO lose entitlements and it’s very difficult to get them reinstated.
