I’ve been renting out my Edinburgh flat since I moved down here but the new tenants aren’t moving in until September when uni starts.
It’s currently being advertised with a letting agent in Edinburgh for August but I thought I would ask if any LBers that I know are interested in a trip to Scotland for the festival. (I am sorry to be excluding most of you but I love the flat and dont wan’t any hassle)
It’s a 2 bedroom top floor flat in the city centre with a massive sitting room, kitchen and shower room. The kitchen has plates, utensils, washing machine etc etc, ie all the stuff you’d expect if you were a student. You’d need to take bedding and towels.
There are 2 double beds, a comfy huge leather sofa and plenty of space for inflatable mattresses…but there is only one toilet so I suppose that would limit numbers.
It’s right in the centre of old town…you can see the castle from the kitchen window. Its opposite potterrow and loads of other festival venues are within 5mins.
ps As it is so central, there is nowhere to park a car for miles without a permit. To be honest you dont really need to car for Edinburgh because its so small and it is generally quicker to walk everywhere from the flat eg 5mins to the castle, 10 minutes to Princes Street, 10mins to the train station and 30mins to the bottom of Leith. There is free bike parking in streets nearby but most dont have anything to chain your bike to. The train only takes 4h15min so probably the best option.
I used to hate the festival when I had to drive to work because it was a nightmare getting home and parked…I often had to get up at 8am on a Saturday to get my car off the yellow line and into a permit space… but in 2006/7 I had a job at the health centre in Potterow which was amazing…especially because we got free tickets for stuff because a lot of the comedians etc would temporarily register at the surgery for a month!
I lived in Edinburgh from 03-04 in Polwarth and then again 06-08 in Stockbridge. Lovely city, true the weather is better down south though. How about yourself?
I went to Edinburgh for Uni in 1997 and was there until August 2007 (apart from a year in 2004 when I was living in London).
I lived in Newington for the first few years and then moved to this flat in 2000.
Nope. Used to “play” football on the meadows but that really just meant standing about in blades and shin pads!
I used to work in Frasers and spent all the money I earned on long vodkas.
I dont think I did much at uni other than drink and sleep. What an easy 5 years that was!
Cant believe freshers week was 12 years ago. I feel really old now…off to cry!
I’ll send the details to my cousin, she has a friend with a flat in Edinburgh and a pub out in the sticks, they may know someone who might be interested.
I know…what a great place to live. Never had to get a taxi home because pretty much everywhere was within walking distance which meant we had loads of random parties and regularly got visits from passing pissed friends who couldnt be ars*d going home.
I didnt spend much time eating in Negociants but used to drink a lot in Assembly (used to be Iguana).
I miss being in Edinburgh but most of my good friends moved away before I did…plus I dont think I can face moving back into a top floor flat with no lift (92 steps) for a third time!
Bar Kohl on George Forth or Candy Bar on George Street were my favourites. Also what was the name of that dance club off the Royal Mile that didn’t have a name or anything outside but just bouncers? Establishment was also one of my favourites before it got sold.
Do you mean the one on Niddrie Street with the really low ceiling where a mixture of condensation and sweat would drip onto you?? I think it was more recently called the Honeycomb and perhaps the Vaults before that. I preferred the liquid rooms after the place on the Cowgate got shut down for drugs - I’ve forgotten what it was called.
Honeycomb, that’s the one. I thought it was great no signs or anything. I don’t remember any sweat dripping down though. Was great that they had three rooms with different music going on.
I didn’t like Liquid rooms, only went a few times. I didn’t venture into cowgate too much and definitely stayed away from Subway.
The club on the Cowgate was kind of Edinburgh’s version of the Arches. It was shut down 10 years ago though and is now a cheesy place. Scrubway was crap but I had quite a few weird nights at the one on Lothian Road.
