Removing an alternator cover and self servicing.

So how difficult can it be to remove an alternator cover on a CBF600? I did an engineering apprenticeship - so this isn’t all new to me… but bikes are… my engineering was on jet engines.

Alternator cover… in theory I think I need to drain the oil (although not totally necessary) then remove the cover and grommet - grease new grommet with grommet grease and re-seat… then replace new cover and snug all bolts…

Does that sound about right?

I really want to get my hands on a Honda Service Manual for the CBF600SA - but do you think I can find one?

You dont have to drain the oil if you tip the bike over onto the other side, although I don’t actually recommend that.

Matt, self servicing is a doddle and you are on right tack re replacing cover would be disinclined to lubricate any bolts which fit into engine block any excess lubrucaton or grease may expand in the enclosed hole and may possibly cause problems much better that the bolts are fitted clean IMHO.

If you are gonna do filter change would reccomend changing your air filter too as this can really hamper performance. If ya need a hand or advise I am free this weekend and not amillion miles away from you. May be busy sunday morning, but free otherwise PM me if ya need a hand. All the jobs you are proposing I have done on my bike and quite a few of my mates.

Do you need to remove the engine cover to re-finished it Matt? I repaired mine in-place. I’ve tipped a bike on its side before as well to replace the cover.

Whilst I’d agree "excess lubrucaton or grease " on bolts isn’t a good Idea, I wouldn’t put them in dry, a light smear of 9143 or something will always help come time to undo them again, don’t pack any blind hole with grease, just a little on the thread (this will also help stop any reaction between different metals).

If you’ve got a torque wrench or can get hold of one, you can make sure you don’t strip any threads when re-fitting ( real pain to re-tap or heli-coil).
