Am moving flat shortly, and at the new place I don’t have anything to secure my bike to. I’m therefore looking into getting a ground anchor to be able to lock mine to.
I came across this on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007N2X38E), and was wondering if anyone had any comments about it, or recommendations for a different product?
They good, in fact I brought another for when my bike was to be left at my neighbours but as his cast iron lamp post wasn’t going anywhere I didn’t fit it. Yours for £15
A ground anchor is no more secure than the chain you run through it and/or the rest of your security. Why go to all that work of digging out and concreting in to install a yanchor when the chain can be defeated in minutes?
Agree but my FireBlade got stolen from a Almax chain through a council ground anchor point. They’ll get anything if they want it. But I’d still suggest you do go with a ground anchor and chain if better security isn’t available. It’s more about putting off the opportunists with a van but no tools. If they’ve got tools they’ll have it whatever you do.
Covers are good too. An Oxford Stormex can be locked to the front and rear wheels and is a pain in the arse to get off even if you have the keys so is a pretty good deterrent.
Security is all about intelligent layering…not just the biggest chains you can find…multiple layers means it’s more likely you will keep hold of your pride and joy…however you have to get it right every time, the thief only has to get it right once!
I do use an Oxford Monster chain/lock, and have an Oxford Stormex that covers the bike.
Yanchor looks interesting, but I’m not going to be allowed to install something like that there!
(My current setup is that the bike is chained to a reinforced concrete rod 10cm thick, that’s part of a disabled ramp)
Art, I think the advantage of the Y-anchor is that it’s all beneath the ground so nothing to trip over.
Makes sense if you’re putting in a new slab (although could no doubt be done a bit cheaper with a bit of drainpipe) but I wouldn’t bother trying to install one in existing concrete. In fact I didn’t - my ground anchor is a bit of 16mm rebar fixed into the slab with epoxy resin for a grand total of £0 as I acquired it from work.
My point was to fit a bolt down ground anchor rather than the yanchor. Saves digging up whats there and filling in, although if you’re digging a hole why not just concrete the chain in?
