What apps can you recommend? When I go buzzing around, I’d like to be able to look back on ride, around note down where I’ve been for future reference. Ideally after something that can be looked at on a Windows PC.
Details I need are:
The full name of the application,Cost,A website for it, or where I can get it from,What mobile operating system it runs on, e.g. Windows 8.1, Android 4.4 etc,Your positive and negative experience of it.
What else should I be considering?
What do you want to do with the route having viewed it - are you after shoving it on a satnav or something?
Google MyTracks is free and fairly good. If all you want is maps you can look at it’s fine, but you’ll need to upload them onto Google Maps and view them there (which the app can do, though the new one speaks of ‘google drive’ and I’m not entirely sure what that is). I suspect you could download a GPX from there, but it’s a habit of making one ride into twenty 10-mile-long segments or something which might get tedious. This is free and has been on Android for years.
The app I used to use for this on iPhone had been abandoned so I recently had to find an alternative and ended up using Runtastic Pro.
I have no idea how much it costs as I got it when they had a free promotion, but they seem to do this often. They also have a free version, presumably with ads, and also have versions for Android.
Although it is primarily a fitness app I only use it for GPS tracking, something I first started doing when going for walks, but its list of activities includes motorcycling so I guess that must be a common use.
You can view your tracks on a map within the app or their web site. From the latter you can export these as GPX, and a couple of other formats, to use with other sites and apps.
Although it is not a satnav, you can also design your own routes on the site (or import from GPX) which can then be displayed within the app to follow. These can be private or shared with others.
I believe you can also edit your own tracks to save as routes, although I have written my own site for doing that so I literally only use the site to import and export GPX files to and from the app.
My only complaint about the app is it does not have a landscape mode, which would make the map far more usable when following a route. Although dependent on the phone the battery, unsurprisingly, runs down quickly if you leave the screen on, but switched off in a pocket it seems to work pretty well.
Depends how much detail you need. If you have an android phone unless you switch it off through the google website, you can view where your phone is reporting your location every few minutes for last several years.
