There’s a rat under the floorboards in my kitchen (just like the song). I’m not too sure what to do, he doesn’t seem to be put off by my stamping on the floor either, I can just hear this gnawing sound ever few minutes. I’ve never heard it before or had reason to believe there’s been any rodents about since I moved it. I’ve had a good inspection of the house and I’ve noticed that around all the pipes and holes someone’s alredy filled everything in - possibly to stop a previous rodent problem.
The gaps in the floor boards are absolutely tiny, not even a mouse could fit through them, they’re just tiny slits you could barely pass a 50p piece through. I squirted down some raid fly spray in a bid to irritate the rat in hope he would go back from where he came from.
My worry is that if he is somehow stuck, he might die and cause a terrible smell in the flat. It is definitely a rat because I shon a torch through the gaps and there was evidence of a large rat dropping in the cavity of the floor. Bastard ratty!
Anyone know if those sonar things are any good at keeping away future rodents?
Mate they say for every one rat there is another 10. Sounds like you need to start lifting the floorboards.Rats can squeeze through tiny gaps aswell. They can shrink there heads and crawl through. I would sleep with one eye open if I were you as they tend to come out more at night and crawl over your fasce whilst your sleeping.

Yeah I thought so, the gaps are very small but I will need to invest in some longer term solutions in keeping them away from the homestead, this rat got in somewhere, his mates and other smaller rodents could follow.
firstly, rats suffer from neophobia, unlike mice, and do not lay in wait of darkness to come out and run across your face,
if you havent done any proofing to the place, then obviously the rodents can gain access so far, but not further than the proofing that the last person has done, doubtful they will die there, unless you give them a reason too, ie poisons
your only real option is to either lift the boards in the area you have seen activity and try to find an entry point, or if you have access outside, investigate outside
or, give the rat and entry into the house/flat, by removing previously filled areas, and then trap the bugger:w00t:

we have the old fashion break back trap (everyones favorite) baited with peanut butter they cant resists, these work well, as long as your not to squeamish on removal of “dead rat” into bin and resetting just incase its more than one (which it normally is)
or I have another trap here, which is a classic, but if your a bunny hugger type you may frown upon it, as it puts an elasticated strap around their neck which very quickly strangles them:D:w00t:
rat droppings need to me inspected between finger and thumb (gloved of course) because it may look like a large rodent dropping, but it could also easily be a castor (pupating maggot) which looks nigh on the same
those electronic gizmo’s are the biggest load of crap going, save your money for bike stuff, they work only in straight lines, and only work 100% if theres no furniture/objects in the room, as the sound waves do not pass through solid objects, your then left with blindspots behind these items, so rodents soon learn the “safe areas”, you could prehaps put 4 in a room, one on each wall, giving you a criss cross pattern, but at £15 to £20 a piece, a flat/house soon becomes expensive
