On the odd days I use the car to go to work, I always keep a good eye out for bikers, I travel down the A2 everyday either on the bike or in the car, and when Im in the car and I spot a bike filtering I always move over to let them through and on most occassions end up driving through **** on the edge of the road so they can pass, and then Not even a thanks, Nod, Wave or leg out or even acknolodgement that I even moved.
Yes there probably concertrating on the road ahead, but when I ride and a car lets me pass, I make a effort to say thanks, 1 because they let me through and didnt have too, and 2 because if theres a bike travelling behind me chances are the car wont move.
Some bikers have to remember, in most cases if a car does move over for you, he’s/she’s probably a biker themselves thats why they spotted you coming in the first place, so try a be curtious please…
i am always quite touched when someone moves over for me, and will always try and thank them,
but some people are in their own zone and perhaps for safeties sake taking the hands off the bars isnt always appropriate, but alittle nod wouldnt hurt.
It gives me a sense of enormous well-being.
And then I’m happy for the rest of the day,
Safe in the knowledge there will always be a bit of my heart devoted to it.
Always acknowledge a courtesy - It always gets my goat when I flash someone through etc and there is no acknowledgement - then I wish I had the powers of telikenesis - I’d make their engine fall of its mountings or something!
I always acknowledge car drivers with a leg out/nod - part of me is gratified that they have even noticed me as most don’t. I always acknowledge other bikers if they let me past while filtering etc - although I have noticed that a lot of BMW riders (particularly GS riders or anything with panniers) act as if you’re invisible or something and don’t seem to nod/leg out if you do them a courtesy
I always try and acknowlege even if it is was clearly an involuntary “Oh my God I didn’t see that bike!” swerve. But I acknowlege it is easier to raise a hand etc on an auto than a geared bike.
What car you driving mate? Im up and down the A2 everyday - a car did move over for me this morning in the outside lane near Danson, could have been you! Sure I said thanks though
I bike up the A2 most days towards Deptford and yesterday met a mental biker on route. There is a point where two roads merge into one, and then a sudden right turn straight after.
This bloke (with a small number plate and no mirrors) cut in front of me to the left, with his RIGHT indicator on, then swerved back to the right, so everyone thought he was turning right, then came back to the left lane and got into trouble with some poor car driver. He was a danger to himself and others. I have never seen such a display of bad riding in my life!! I shall call this man the A2 Maniac - maybe that was he who you met?
i have this alot when you’re riding behind a car and they move over to let you through but it just isnt safe for you to pass!? they move into the gutter, pot holes, drains etc making such an effort but there aint room for you, you cant see ahead, the middle of the roads a mess etc…
i just wish some people in cars could understand when it aint safe for you to pass em really…
Had similar situation this morning. Van in front moved over to the left, driver frantically waving me by out of the window. Unfortunately, the road was narrowing, there was another truck in front of him showing no sign of moving out of the way, there was an oncoming bus and a pedestrian crossing just up ahead! Needless to say I declined the overtake I could see the driver in his rear view mirror and he looked totally perplexed. It might sound paranoid but generally if someone waves me through or is kind enough to move over to the left I take extra time to make sure they are not inadvertently waving me into trouble. Also some people move slightly to the left before u-turning :w00t: I always nod or wave something if someone goes out of their way to be considerate. It’s just a shame that the considerate drivers seem to be outnumbered 10 to 1 by the inconsiderate ones.
I always nod at least, sometimes when I’m filtering it’s hard to lift a hand from a bar, and it’s not so easy to do the “leg wave” on the scooter! It’s amazing how much more noticed I get on the x8 than on my previous scooter. I had a car virtually driving on the verge the other day - he was spraying me with crap and dust and I just dropped back as I refuse to squeeze through a gap between oncoming traffic unless the speed is very slow and I’m filtering. I just waited for a time when I thought it was safe to go.
I don’t know what happened to day on the A10 but I was filtering up from the M25 roundabout north to the next roundabout and I passed a car (with another biker a little way behind me) and suddenly heard the squeal of tyres. I looked in the mirror and it wasn’t the bike behind it must have been the car next to me. I wonder if I scared the Bejesus out of him!!
