R6 error code 35 HELP - Slugish turn over

Hi all. Any ideas on this one:
was riding home when out of the blue my 09 R6 went all sluggish on me and the orange engine warning light came on. Now bike runs terrible and getting Error code 35 on the dash (ignition coil open circuit issue I believe). I have bought one new ignition coil and checked each of the old ones, one at a time and still errors. I’ve also unplugged my PC, quick shifter connectors and un/re-plugged those connections. Still Error 35.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Error code 35 = broken

Took the battery off last night and my PC5 (still has QS and Gear indicator), reconnected the battery this morning and nothing, still error code 35 :frowning:

Do you work on an IT help desk? Power down and reboot probably won’t work since this is a motorbike, not a Dell.

Did you do anything to rectify the fault Evilblade referred to above???

35 - Open circuit detected in the primary lead of the cylinder #3 ignition coil.

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: Evilblade has given you the problem, now you need to figure out how to resolve it - i think Google will be your friend for this or one of the Yamaha/R6 forums as its probably happened to someone else.

Not yet. The bike runs very sluggish and cuts out, sounds like only 1 or 2 cylinders are running.

Yeah. I haven’t heard it but I’m guessing that number 3 cylinder isn’t running. Just a hunch.

Is it odd that even when I disconnect all 4 ignition coil connectors, I still get error 35? Hope it’s not further up the line like the ECU :frowning:

:laugh::laugh: - Your on form today, whatever gave you that idea?

It could just be that your coil has come off the plug, again something tells me to check plug 3 first…:ermm:

I’ve checked plug 2 and 3, swapped them around, bought a new Coil and moved that around, but is consistently sluggish with error 35

Suggest you call Rob as recommended in this thread. By all accounts he is good, fast and cheap - a very rare combination…

Start it and check which cylinders are running. I.e check with pipes are hot and which is cold.

Thank you for Robs contact

Will try a couple more things before trying a mechanic. Will have another careful look at the loom and maybe fit new spark plugs

Hi this might help -AH_1002Hi again,My previous post may have been a little off. I was thinking the R6 had the dual coils not on plug like it has. Though they are still set up in pairs so it’s not entirely different. I did some digging in the manual and found what could help. There are two coil circuits from the CDI - IG1 and IG2, each circuit powers two coils. So, the gray and black line runs to two coils and the other to the remaining two. Now what you have are two pairs of coils that fire together. Keep in mind the previous post - I-4, 4 cycle, 180 timing and 1243 firing order. One pair of coils must be attached to 1&4 and the other to 2&3. The problem is that in the wiring diagram they label the coils 1,2,3,4. This is confusing as it doesn’t refer to the cylinders. Since you made the wiring harness you should be able to figure out which coils are in pairs and then just make sure one pair is on 2,3 and the other on 1,4. If it won’t run swap the pairs. There’s no way to know for sure from the wiring diagram, but my guess is that IG1 = 1&4 and IG2 = 2,3.

Also this is from this link which is quite useful -http://fsae.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/125607348/m/43410148221/xsl/print_topic

Possibly not.

As the error is…
35 - Open circuit detected in the primary lead of the cylinder #3 ignition coil.

The “pimary” circuit is the the first part of the ignition
circuit which used to be from battery via points to ignition coil.

And “open circuit” means there is a break in the circuit.

So it does not matter what you change with respect to HT leads
or spark plugs (that is the secondary circuit).

Go look for a lose connection or boken wire on the pimary
circuit for number three cylinder and as someone said if
you don’t know which one is number 3 then try running the
bike and check for the cold pipe, (it will be connected
to number 3 cylinder).

Just thought - open circuit - have you checked the fuses as a blown fuse breaks the circuit?

Some good ideas here. Thanks everyone. Ran a diagnostics test just now. Still coming back as fault 35. Will start checking cables :frowning:

Ordered a whole loom from fleabay as couldn’t see any visible broken wires. So hopefully that will fix it. In the mean time I’ve changed the spark plugs, the 1st one was wet, other 3 dry. I thought the 3rd one would be wet?

Wow - that seems pretty extreme! Surely it’s worth 30/50 quid to get a mechanic to look at it before you swap out the loom?
