BMWs float ashore
By: Tom Rayner

A sinking cargo ship dropped its load of brand new BMW bikes into the sea off the Devon coast.

Locals around Branscombe beach were treated to the unusual sight as several containers packed with brand new BMWs were washed ashore – much to the delight of these scavengers who even managed to start the bike on the beach.

Amongst the bikes recovered are the £10,895 luxury tourer BMW R1200RT and the £6,495 middle-weight sports tourer F800ST.

Fancy finding that on whilst walking on the beach…wow!

In all seriousness, would the thing run again??? I mean being in water etc???

Apparently has already started, no reason why it wouldnt really.

If I found something of value like that, that I happen to just trip over whilst walking on the beach then they would have to be bloody quick to catch me…

well… over 20 bikes have been taken now… the offical word acording to the 1995 salvage act is that you can take stuff but you have to declare that you have it - and if the owner says he want’s it back you have to surrender it.

Police have closed all the roads to the beach and are stopping people and giving them a form they must fill in if they take stuff.

Looks like I better uncover my Scuba Gear and take a trip down there, might be able to save myself 10k!!

Jerome, if you see any can you get me one of the barrels of wine that are there too (red please)

Ian

There’s a pic of an F800ST (have you checked your garage graphif800?) with lights and engine on in tonights London Lite… I’m not pissed off at all!!! :\

Still could be worse, they could have got there hands on something really desirable like a red F800S…

Russ

But what about the other containers still on the about to capsize ship!

More desirable…? That’s the cheap seat!! Seems like they’re pretty bomb proof if that little scally sitting on it could get it started after bobbing through the sea for a bit Mind you my bikes’ been sitting in this rain and wind for the past month with no issues

800ST’s? Shame about the tank range on them.

This is like walking into a bike shop that has storm damaged doors and riding off with something. It’s still inky-fingered thievery. People seem to be conveniently believing that it’s a case of finders keepers.

To be fare, the law is finders, keepers, then you pay for it.

The law wants people to remove this stuff, no-one wants a beach cluttered with baby’s nappies. The law just wants to be able to trace people afterwards when the owners of the property, or whoever has bought the salvage rights, try and recover some of the value.

So as long as you fill in the form within 28 days you can walk away with the bike. You just have to expect BMW, an insurance company or a salvage company to send the boys round some day hence. I suspect that as the value of a bike that has been washed up is somewhat less than 100% someone will one day try and recover the scrap value of the bikes from the people who took them. They are all going to be traceable if they try and start registering them, but if you wanted one of these machines I expect you could get a reasonably good deal.

Sod this…im off to Devon to get me a bike!

“Only dropped once, never seen rain.” Thought it has been bobbing around in the Channel.

o man ive been so envy about this since i heard it … and thourghyl peed off also … i wanted to be that guy

but no all the bike wouldnt be damaged as water is concered because they would all be water tight (the containers that is) becaus ethey are firstly agiansnt the elements all the time - on the truck and ship. and also if they fell in the water and they wernt water tight then the contents would be ruined.

Just my luck…Took a trip down to the beach to do my bit for the salvage company and help clear up (wink wink)

I managed to force a container open guess what fell out …Only 30 bloody immigrants !!!

I definitely won’t be taking them home with me !!!

not unless they can be filled up with petrol and go at 170 mph tops? But then theres the garage space problem i guess…and if u can leave em in one place while your at work eh? Thats without worrying they may bother the ol wifey while u aint there?
