I’ve booked my practical test for next monday (monday 23rd June). And I was wondering what sort of advice you could give me.
How the test will be set out, what sort of questions will be asked, how long the actual riding part will be, what sort of manouvers i will have to do etc…
what are the important things i should know and what things i should practice.
I know i can find all this on the dvla website but i think it would be good to hear it from people who have done it.
Ride with confidence, stick to the speed limits, ie if it is 40 do 40, if it 60 then do 60. Obviously if the road is crap then do the fastest speed that you are comfortable with. Remember your indicators, life savers, observe. If you have to overtake, then again do it with confidence, but no not get to close to the vehicle in front.
The questions that you will be ask will be on maintenance and carrying a pillion. Your instructor should have briefed you on this.
erm right lol…i would have said like a day or 2 with a school is very very useful.
what bike r u doing it on or are you doin it on a scooter [ur pic?]
if possible, find a experienced rider or someone who has recently passed their test, on this forum and get them to help you or go out on a ride and just check your riding.[exp riders are very good and people who recently passed know what to expect…the inbetweens may have forgotten some of the procedures]
i did it on my own bike and thought i knew enough to pass but i learnt so much over the space of 2 days!
Rule number one - do not filter! There is so much that can go wrong that will fail you and you can’t be failed for only going as fast as the other traffic.
Rule number two - take your time - walk to your bike don’t run, make sure you do not rush. There is a time limit so burn up that time doing stuff you can’t be failed on - see rule number one.
Rule number three - make sure you have your documents and the vehicle is legal - it is amazing how many people fail for not having the theory certificate or CBT or having a bike with faulty lights etc.
thanks for the tips so far. Yeah i will check the lights and everything like that, I’ve also got the mot done last week so that will make sure that there are no problems like that.
There is a place not to far from me where they do training for all the motorbike tests and i’m going to give them a call tommorow and see when and how much it costs for me to go down there so they can give me a bit of help.
oh cool, i didn’t know that there was a time limit, i though that you just finished when the instructor had covered everything.
and yes, i’m doing it on my scooter, well it meets all the requirements for the “A” test, i also emailed someone about it and they said that it was fine.
I did my test just a short while ago so I know what to expect. Everyone else seems to have covered most things, and getting even an hours tuition is a great idea.
You’ve got 4 things you need to do in your test, emergency stop, U turn, pushing the bike in a U turn, and hill start.
For your emergency brake make sure you don’t skid the back brake, the examiner will never know if you don’t use your back brake as you won’t be going fast enough to need both in order to pass (I didn’t touch mine just in case. Was rather worried about doing it by accident)
Your U turn is just a case of being confident, keep your feet up And when you practice it try doing doing it in the smallest space possible, that way using the whole road width in your test is nice and easy
Just ride easy, keep your eyes open and make sure you’re doing all your observations and indicate properly (that includes turning off your indicator as soon as you pull over)
o yeah after emergency stop, come to a complete stop, find neutral [or in your case stay put i think] and do a lifesaver over both shoulders and check both mirrors before going off again!
the most common failer! which is what I failed for first time is called making progress!
Someones already mentioned it in not so many words - but if our in a 60 do 60 and if on a national speedlimit duel carriageway/motorway do 70. Obviously if its safe to do so.
I failed for sitting within the flow of traffic at 55-60 when i should have taken the initiative to overtake at 70. Was gutted as I’d rode a perfect test albiet 2 minors. They can be arsy, so turn up with the propper gear, good boots, jacket, helmet and gloves - and BE POLITE it will go a long way
i failed first time for overtaking at a set of lights in a two-lane road because i passed the lead car at a set of zigzags. so don’t do that. i was extremely nervous beforehand when i retook and passed. what helped was a bit of meaningless chit chat with the examiner before, it made him more human and put me more at ease. also, watch for the speed signs, they’ll probably take you through 20s, 30s, nationals etc and the examiner will watch for you seeing them and reacting. there’s only about five or six questions and of them they only ask two, so it’s easy to learn the asnwers. good luck
just to clear it up as a lot of people are asking, i’m doing the full “A” test, which will restrict me for two years and then i will be able to ride anything. And yes, i’m doing it on my scooter, which is manual, so i will be able to find neutral after i stop
And the rules do not say anything about not being able to do it on a scooter as they only ask about speed, enginge size and transmissin, and my scooter meets all of them
sorry for hijacking your post!
but im worried about going too slow now aswell because my bike wont really go over 50 ,
thats where the red mark thing is
and last time i forced it to go 65mph it broke
