Opinions. Are they worth the added expense? Is it a noticeable difference having one?
I usd to ask the same question. Bit the bullet and got a great deal via ebay. 2006 ZX6R.
Fitted myself, had a custom map done.
Like a new bike. Well worth money, greater response, torque low and mid range.
Do it!
might be worth you speaking to spider, hes just fitted one to his r1
Power Commanders don’t give you a performance increase per se. In simple terms, they enable you to alter ECU (engine management system) settings.
If your bike is standard and running well, I wouldn’t bother with a Power Commander. However, if you make or have made performance upgrades, such as changing your exhaust, air filter etc to better ones, then a Power Commander with a custom map will usually make big improvements to the way the bike performs.
If I had that much cash to spend I would rather get my forks revalved and feel the difference
What sort of price is a Power Commander? (Fitted)
200 squids plus fitting
£200 incl fitting is a good deal mate…where you getting that from?
They have obviously gone up since I last bought mine
Closer to 300 squidlies now eh?
Try american ebay, they would out about 2/3 of the Uk price.
Try this seller on ebay.
Bought mine from him. Based in Holland. Arrived within a week. Cheapest place I could find. Paid £185 for mine (ZX6R) Brand new. No hassle at all.
Fitted it myself. very simple. Good straightforward instructions included.
Re Maps. Goto dynojets website, dependant on your end can, they maybe one already posted on there to download. Otherwise, get a custom map done. Don’t know how much, expect to pay approx £100 - 150.
I got mine done free at Dynojet in Preston. Several places do them, including Southern Cross, NW6 or Steve Jordans M/C’s.
Good luck
If its a Suzuki, before you commit to a PC3, have a word with Steve Jordan Motorcycles. They can fully remap standard Suzuki ECU’s which can save £££’s
I picked up mine for £127 new on eBay.
PDQ or Dyno Speed Developments are good at Dyno work.
I went down that route with my last bike and didn’t like the results.
I’ve already got a USB PCIII sitting here, it is just the added expense of getting a custom map. I don’t see the point in putting it on unless it is tuned to this bike. Downloading a map from the internet is just a stop gap. The bike runs quite nicely with Akraprovic cans on but I’ve not changed over the filter yet. I’ve got to make a decision before the next service comes up in a couple of weeks… mo money, mo money, wish I was a rich man!
Just out of interest what didn’t you like about the re-mapped ECU?
The fueling around 5-6k was a bit jerky. I don’t think you can iron it out with a stock ECU cos they are set to run lean here for the EU tests.
Even with a TRE fitted?
No TRE
the maps from the powercommander site aren’t that bad as it goes - afro can prob confirm this but pretty sure his bike was dyno’d and they made some very minor tweaks but largely the map had the bike running well already. might have just got lucky tho. if you’ve only modded the slip-ons and y-pipe so far it might be worth having a think about whether you want to do any further mods first like the velocity stacks, air filter etc before shelling out for the dyno time
if you leave the USB hooked up and feed it under into the tail, you can try the maps back to back and just update with your laptop. the engine needs to be running on the r1 for the PCIII to be powered up to accept the map (you can load it up just when you flick the power on when it does a system check but its a bit more awkward).
i reckon the new map made it run a little more crisp (power delivery was still smooth on mine after the exhaust mod) but changing the gearing made a fair bit more of a difference tbh
sorry if that was confusing, changing the gearing is a mechanical change. smaller front sprocket or larger rear one changes the ratio of engine speed to rear wheel making it rev higher for a given speed and increases the torque on the wheel. makes the power more useable on the litre bikes as you can reach the powerband earlier
only way to improve mileage is to make sure the bike has its AF set correctly (and not wasting fuel with it being too rich),controlling your right hand and using higher gears.
the new gixxer thou has the diff fuel maps but from what i’ve read it doesn’t affect fuel consumption particularly. if you stick in on mode A chances are you want to play more and you’ll use more petrol tho so might help attitude/riding style wise.
