Wondering if anyone does or knows how to use a PDA with TomTom on their bike? I use mine for the car but want to be able to use it on my bike if I need to (bearing in mind I only really use my bike for short journeys)
What mount would I need for a Kawasaki ER6n and a Dell Axim X51v? The GPS receiver is wireless. How would I protect the PDA if it’s mounted?
Will this even work? How do I listen to instructions? Would it be better to have it in a mini clear tank bag?
I am clearly clueless which is why I’m asking for any advice!
Thanks!
I use a ram mount and a broadit charger and holdere, the ram mount is the best bit, i wouldnt get a broadit mountagain as now there are probably betterone on the market:
I don’t have Autocomm but my PDA has a standard headphone socket - so do you mean to use that?
What about not mounting my PDA at all but setting it up before my journey, putting it and the GPS receiver in my pockets and then just listening to the insructions? Does anyone do that?
Trouble with that is that sometimes TomTom tells you to turn at the wrong time and often I’ve missed a turning because I can’t see it beforehand.
The software stupidly doesn’t say, “Take the next left”, but just turn left.
I’ve been using TomTom 5.21 running on Windows Mobile for about a year now, and have just used it in my jacket pocket with some headphones to hear the voice instructions.
I wouldn’t recommend it…I’m looking to get a mount for my VPA now (also known as an XDA Compact I think).
I may just have the PDA in a small magnetic map holder/tank bag so I can glance down and refer to while listening to instructions as I really won’t be using it that much!
Think I just don’t want to have a permanent mount on my bike in case it affects the ‘look’ of it! So vain, I know !
I’ve velcroed my Bluetooth GPS receiver to the tank on my R1, but I should also be able to velcro the PDA somewhere.
I was trying to find somewhere around the dash to mount it so that it would be weather proof.
EDIT: Awesome…Just looking at picture of your R1 and can see that I could probably just velcro the PDA to the rev counter…Don’t really look at it anyway.
the ball fits inside the hollow steering stem, then you need to buy an adaptor bar and a diamond base piece which fits onto the back of my tom tom, if you give the guy a ring with you bike details he should be able to tell you what items you need and where to order them from.
I’ll try and take some pictures of mine to show you.
You can not rely on Audio alone - as said above instructions need to be seen to be understood. I tried and as said above the instructions are given almost as you pass the junction not before.
I unzipped the bag of my Oxford tank bag to reveal a map pocket which I put my PDA in. I found it a bit too close to me so you are looking straight down to see it rather than more forwards if you get a mount to the yoke etc. But an easy/cheap/waterproof solution if you can put up with how it looks and the buttons of your PDA being pushed by the Map pocket.
Note the bluetooth GPS can be anywhere - in a rucksack, pocket or under the seat.
As for the Audio - Bluetooth headset would be nice but consider how comfortable a bulky headset would be under your helmet. I couldn’t put up with iPod headphones so i bought Helmet speakers.
I can sell you a new set for £10 if you want. See attachment
Consider just buying a mobile phone cradle and attaching somehow to your bike. Some are adjustable and should open wide enough to fit your PDA.
