Im off the see a cbr600f (X-reg) soon, Apparently it’s only done a handful of miles in 2 years. Whats are the potential issues with leaving a bike standing for this period of time?
Also does anyone know if the X-reg (2000) model is fuel injected or will most probably have a manual choke?
Last thing, how many keys would it have had from new- 2?
2 keys from new, cbr-f was carbed up until 2004 if I remember right.
check it’s cold before it’s started. a warmed up engine might be hiding nasty surprises.
check for flat spots on the tyres from it being sat around a long time and check the chain for rust
Look for everything and anything, if something appears odd or doesn’t sit right walk away. Your enemies will be corrosion, deterioration and seizures. The fact you need to ask what to look out for would indicate you should be taking a more experienced friend along to check it over.
The easy to spot bits includecorrosion inside the fuel tankseized brake components - pads to disks, caliper pistons etcwheel and headstock bearingsseized forks/suspensionframe/swinging armchain and sprockets
deteriorated gaskets and seals
The not so easy and sometimes impossible to spot bits are mainly the engine internals, especially if it has been left standing with old oil and coolant in the engine. Old oil/coolant is corrosive which can lead to seizure, partial seizure or premature wear to many parts includingpiston ringscylinder linersvalve stems, guides, collets, followers, shims, bucketsbearing shells - big/little ends, crankshaft/camshaft journalsblocked oil/water waysseized thermostat
You get the picture, then you have things like deteriorating valve springs to consider, the list just goes on and on. If you’re looking to buy it and re-build it fair enough, but if you’re expectation is for a reliable daily ride you may be better off looking for something that’s had more regular use.
Its not all doom and gloom but it can be difficult to know what you’re actually getting, ask Mrs Gump and she’ll tell you ‘a used motorcycle is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you’re going to get’.
