Highways Agency announces plan to re-pave “road to hell” ![]()
The Highways Agency today formally announced a GBP12million project to re-pave the road to hell, between junctions 12 and 21.
“The original road surface - good intentions - was never designed to withstand the volume of traffic we’re seeing on the road currently. What you need for a job like this is a hard-wearing surface, like a 25mm bituminous compound with 20mm pre-coated chippings and a high stone content, for example”, a Highways Agency spokesperson said.
Work will begin on October 1st 2007 and will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption. During the closures, all hell-bound traffic will be re-routed along the A361 via Daventry.
A spokersperson for consumer-group Condemned Souls Transport Alliance said, “We’re pleased at the decision to re-surface the road as our members have been complaining for years that it wasn’t fit for purpose. What we would also welcome is a new set of services at Junction 16 because the food and service at the current Little Thief are, quite literally, diabolical”.
Planners say they will have the road open before the Office Party season when traffic levels are traditionally at their highest. ![]()
