This morning as I waited at the lights on my way to work, this nice policeman stopped for a chat to tell me that there are some new regulations coming up regarding small reg plates…apparently, there will be £1000 fine if stopped with an illegal one, don’t know why he pointed me out in particular :Whistling:
Anyway, anyone knows about this and if/when it will take effect?
So exactly how does this reduce crime? And what are they hoping to achieve by doing it? When speeding cameras are digital and can pick out a mole on the back of your neck - why do we need to have numberplates the size of an elephants head?
If it’s going to be £1000 for a small plate I’ll just take it off completely and let them catch me if they want to fine me :w00t: Up here in the sticks we see a police car about once a month if that.
No problem mac, anything to help. Blinkers indeed.
I wonder what the fine would be if you had no number plate. Sorry officer it must have fell off? Or if you crack it in half? I guess people will be rushing to get personalised plates with 3 characters on! They are only about £250.
Calm down everyone! There has always been a MAXIMUM fine of £1000 for failing to display a registration mark conforming to the regulations ( Regulation 10 Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 ). What is happening is that due to the reliance on ANPR technology they are cracking down on smaller and non conforming plates. The usual route is either a non endorseable FPN or the vehicle defect scheme which requires a visit to an MOT testing station with a conforming plate to avoid a visit to the Magistrates Court.
It’s a little used alternative to the FPN - Basically you’re inconvenienced by going to an MOT testing centre, paying a fee to have your conforming number plate looked at by an MOT tester, your slip of paper stamped by them, and then you have to go to a police station to hand the slip of paper in. If you comply with that there is no prosecution. If you fail to comply it’s a visit to the Magistrates, where the fine is likely to be substantially greater than £30, and you may have costs awarded against you. It’s probably cheaper and more convenient to accept a £30 FPN, which is the route almost all police officers will take these days anyway (less writing you see…)
I only use the small one for shows :ermm: so I have a proper one under the seat, in the past when I have forgot to take it off and been pulled over, I explain the problem and replace the large plate and usually get a “pay more attention” talk. Perhaps they are taking a tougher line?
