So what’s the news… or can’t you say?
Just found out I get laid off on the 28th, just had $1 billion slashed from the global budget so no renewals for contractors.
Ho hum looks like Christmas off and start looking for something for Feb
Sorry to here that…looks liek Christmas is cancelled for quite a few people this year:(
sorry to hear that, guess the credit crunch is really starting to bite
lol
how much do you need to start a buisness like mentioned? i know a good mechanic/mot tester,
Sorry to hear that BM. I was in the same situation when Rover collapsed taking my company with them. I know it’s a shock but it aint the end of the world. Look at it as an opportunity rather than a disaster:)
Luckily I won’t be effected too much. The lay off till Jan/Feb will be my decision and I’m off on 3 holidays between end of the month and beginning of Jan anyway so it all sort of fits nicely
Have 4 contract offers already so not disheartened at all. This is my 22nd year as a contractor so you get used to it
lol lucky you:)
I will work through Xmas and New Years:)
Sorry to hear that, as Kevsta says legally you are not entitled to any redundancy pay, however the company has to show that they have consulted and they have to show how they identified your post rather than somebody elses.
The best free advice, as Kevsta says is from Acas.
Sorry to here about you as well BM, hopefully you get sorted out sooner rather than later.
Milleman, what’s the news? Don’t keep us all in suspense!
Back in 1990 I was working for a company that went into receivership, it was bought out but me and 2 other guys thought it was going the same way again and as we had always wanted to work for ourselves we left and started the company I still run.
My wife was 6 months pregnant and it was the last big recession. It wasn’t easy, long hours, very little money to start with, huge stresses at times but it was the best decision I ever made.
Sometimes it takes something like redundancy to kickstart (not an intentional pun) into action.
If you believe you can make it work then you probably can.
PS I’m always willing to help a fellow Tuono rider…
I think 1990 it was a lot easier to get started with your own company and by now have a few clients and a name. Much harder to go solo now… or so I think anyhow.
I also wanted to work on my won but found out working from home was damn hard… you’d always end up doing some crap and not do the work, or switch the TV on and end up watching… guess I just never had enough self discipline.
Hope everything works out ok Milleman (and BM).
Made a couple of calls last night and I’m back on contract from the 7th December when I get back from Tenerife plus they are happy to work around the Christmas break in Finland and the family ski trip in early Jan.
Fantastic BM, well done, it is good to hear some good news.
They must be paying you too much with all those holidays though:)
BM this was kinda on the cards wasn’t it, you mentioned something last i saw you at BM. Good to see you have sorted yourself out though.
What about Milleman?
Whats going on bro?
I find out on Monday if I am getting made redundant.
Although, I actually applied for it with my company…so keep your fingers crossed I get it!
What sort of contract work do you do BM, must be IT of some sort I would guess if you got work that quickly…contracting is a great life if you can manage it properly…
lol yeah what work is it? I am in IT and like I said I couldn’t get my head around it from home… maybe I am losing out, in the summer when it is nice and sunny I will wish I could work from home, take a 2 3 hours break and take the bike out on empty roads:)
whilst everyone is at work sweating…
Yep it’s IT.
I usualy do test lead, test team management stuff for hardware and software as long as I’m allowed to get in there and test and just not move paper around.
Prefer hardware testing as I get to break things, not quite as much fun when it’s software ![]()
Hi guys , Sorry to keep everyone in suspenders
Yep - the gut feeling was right - was made redundant with immediate effect as of 4 pm Thurs just gone !!
Good news is that I obviously get to keep all my usual perks for my 1 month notice period so Company fuel card , Car , Mobile , Laptop etc all left with me !
Have spent the last couple of days " whoring " myself back out to all my old contacts and have since been offered 3 jobs " if " I want them - you always find out just how good you are and just how respected you have become in your line of work when it only takes 24 hours to receive a call with an offer of a job eh
Not jumping into anything at present as fully paid until 5th Dec so am going to keep on the networking and see what comes my way .
Thanks for all the advice and well wishes - it means a great deal to have you guys as a sounding board and I really appreciate it
And Sherrie - you never know babes - Twoies and I may still be at a " corner shop " nearby soon LOL
