We’ve all seen - and probably bought - some kit which promised to be waterproof, wind proof and breathable only to find out that it let the side down - usually on the waterproof side of things. This got me thinking!
Now I know theres products out there which promise to turn your gear waterproof again but they usually cost a small fortune.
I went to my local shoe shop and bought 2 tins of Scotch Guard (aerosols) for about £5 and sprayed all my gear - now water rolls off it like water of a ducks back. It also makes cleaning a lot quicker as the dirt sticks the the invisible scotch guard layer rather than embedding itself in the weave of your stuff.
PS - works on leathers too as well as man made fibres.
Even better tip, take the car, I know it hurts to do this and its no fun + no wheelies, no overtaking the traffic queues, no being the first away at the lights.
I’ve changed my mind, take the bike a little water never hurt anyone, the fish and ducks seem to like it.
I wonder if the ducks use the same spray as you???:exclamationmark:
Try Nikwax T X Direct. Its a wash in waterproofing system to reproof breathable fabrics including Gortex. Only downside, you have to take out all your armour and replace it after the wash. Works best if its used after washing the garments in Nikwax non detergent washing liquid (Tech Wash) It`s about £5.99 for a pot of each, enough to wash and reproof a two piece suit 2 or 3 times, good for ski wear and other waterproofs as well.
I use cheap car bumper silicone spray…oh yes!- it works but they don’t want you to know that silicone repels water…99p to keep dry…whos avin the last laugh now mr frank Thomas
Tried spraying Scotch Guard on all my gear, and it does work - but I then tried crossing the border in said gear and BAM! It was like riding into a brick wall.
I’ll second this. I have used it on my Triumph Sympatex trousers and they are fully waterproof, even in very heavy downpours. I have a Buffalo jacket that I have not yet treated as it is still fully waterproof. I’ll use the Scotchguard on this one though as I have some at home!
+2. The nikwax stuff is good, but it does wear off over time. You can get away with not taking your armour out before washing (found that one out by mistake!). It’s the best I’ve found so far, although I’m currently trialling some similar stuff (Grangers, I think it’s called. Got it from a cycle shop) that you put in the washing m/c like nikwax. The only difference with this new stuff is that you then put the garment in for a quick tumble dry at low temperature, which is supposed to sort of “set” the waterproofing. Initial reactions are that the new stuff seems to be at least as good as nikwax, but time will tell.
Got a mate who wears for style more than function. Particularly on his vintage scoots.
Everything is waterproofed with “Pledge” silicone furniture polish. On the leather stuff, he coats and re coats and buffs it up to a parade ground shine. Er, not the suede bits.
every winter i get this sort of stuff in through our shop, works a treat, best stuff i’ve had so far is actually meant for tents to seal them during winter use etc, spray it on n the rain just sits on top, when you’re riding the wind just pushes it off, peeerfect
