Had to go to a diff place of work today, in commuterville time. Out of the train, and onto the bike. Coped ok at 7am on the ride in, but the experience didnt want to make me jump back on the bike too quick at the end of the day. If I didnt live 4 miles from the train station at the other end of my commute, probably would have left the bike at work and took the train home:D
Gloves didnt stand up to it. They ARE winter gloves! Been off the bike for three hours now.
Still have numb ends of fingers and tenderness. Feel a little bruised and numb, so do the toes. Did the washing up, the warm water was heaven lol.
Not an extreme case, but am aware the fingers are still smarting from the winter ride. No discolouration or ranulph feinnes blackening of the fingers, and no danger of them falling off lol, will be back to normal soon. BUT, how long?!

My gloves are an (old) pair of Frank Thomas ones and I’ve ridden in the rain on the motorway at night when it was very cold out, and it took ages for the heat to get in - but no water at least
Although the 70 mile journey I keep doing to my dads nearly every week isn’t being too kind on my fingers so I’m probably going to get a set of hot-grips aswell eventually…
When it comes to winter gloves, you definitely do get what you pay for. I have a pair of Alpinestars gore-tex leather gloves that have lasted for the last three years and I’ve never had cold hands with them as far as I can remember. They cost about £150, but they’re worth their weight in gold.
I’ve suffered before with gloves that don’t meet the grade and have had me stopped at the side of the road trying to warm up or find things to keep them shielded from the elements.
Having resisted for years, I’m thinking of going to heated grips. Looks like this winter is going to be a chilly one.
But I ain’t going with the bar muffs. There has just got to be a better looking way of stopping the wind chill. (Google that and see the 70 mph chill factor. Bl**dy frightening.)
Can’t stand bag mits either. how do you brake and blip the throttle in those?
Once after a completely ******up trip in the mountains I lost feeling in a couple of my toes for about 2 weeks. Never turned black though and didn’t drop off, so I was happy!
It must be colder this year because the winter gloves that have been bliss for the last 2 winters are only lasting about 30 minutes before the tips of my fingers start hurting like hell . . . and I have heated grips!
I’m looking for battery operated heated gloves at the moment as I ride more than one bike. Does anyone have any experience of these:
I’ve had the same pair of hein gericke summer gloves for 5 years now i wear them with wool inner gloves and they work a treat thru winter:D but i do one thing that you lot probaly don’t…i give them a liberal coating of gwax a couple of times a year to keep out the wet damp and cold…cold fingers…nah:P
