Motorcyclenews have a database that we should be logging our bike details on to aid in recovery. Have a look at link
I heard about this before; I’d rather not post the kind of information they are requesting on a website which can be hacked into.
Good point Paivi - but you have to remember that in order for MCN to be able to collect this data they have to be part of the data protection act, and under that legislation you have to ensure that you have sufficient protection from that kind of access…
It’s actually exceptionally difficult to ‘hack’ the back end database that would hold the data, and even if you did manage to get the the database tables, if it’s been built properly the data will not be ‘connected’ in a way that would make it useful.
Are you going tonight btw? We’ve still not met properly - last time we talked I was just giving you money and you where calling me GORGEOUS !
Matt’s right. We (LB) have to conform to the Data Protection Act, and that means ensuring our systems are adequately protecting all the member details we have (which are actually surprisingly small in number). Of course, LB employs technology and procedures which go way above what the minimum requirements are in the DPA.
The DPA is a very good thing, the Americans don’t really have a good one and look at all the trouble they have with personal and sensitive data going missing and being sold. It’s bonkers.
You can place a lot of trust in outfits that conform to the DPA, though of course there’s outfits out there that collect sensitive and personal information and don’t conform to the DPA, but we’re proud to do so.
I have gotta agree with you here, my old company developed 5 sites for very big UK holiday group, due to managerial cockups and greed the dev guru moved on and this airline’s .com site got hacked, lo and behold a backup zip file containing the entire database of clients [everything bar the cc numbers that is] got hacked by a kiddie. If I told you how easily, you would probably think I was joking.
Big investigation, big cover up, nobody ever got told what had happened.
MCN is owned by EMAP, I also worked for them doing the big music sites online projects and from my experiences of EMAP and their IT dept I would not trust them with a sweet wrapper let alone details of my baby’s lair . . .
And while I am at it, dont bother wasting stamps entering any of the competitions [in the music mags at least] as funnily enough they often seem to be won by friends of the journalists/staff
oh well, I was only trying?
Didn’t know that our data was so vulnerable? I’ll ride around with no plates and destroy all my credit cards tomorrow
** update **
I’ve just come by some very disturbing information about this site. I would strongly advise everyone to not even think about registering themselves on this site as the details are very easily available. I guess I put too much faith in a large company like Emap. A friend of mine is now in possession of the entire BikeWatch database, with all the personal details of everyone that’s registered!
Further details to follow shortly…
Cheers Jay, lucky I never registered!
That’s shocking news :o
do you think that will make the next shocking mcn headline?
guess not eh?
YOU HAVING A LAUGH!!!
I registered on this last week but now taken details off. Hope no-one got them and not saved on a server or something. I’m moving soon anyway and the bikes comming with me, they’ll never find it I tell ya!!!
They can nick my ID tho, anyone who wants to actually do that I’d love to meet
