Moto GP Assen 25th June 2011

Hi everyone. I want to go by bike with my wife to the assen gp. I will leave on Friday afternoon straight after work. Question: I’m unsure of the best way or where to book (online sites etc) and which part of the track I should get tickets for. Any tips and is anyone else going?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Your journey does depend on whether you just want to go by bike or actually enjoy riding there?

Ferry is the easy most expensive option, i generally catch the train to Calais and ride there, almost all will be motorway but once you get closer to Assen you will join the masses on bikes.

Something to remember, at Assen the MotoGP race is on the saturday and you do find there are plenty of drunk dutch and germans camping. I have only been to the GP once and i am not in a rush to go back. Because they have Sunday to recover they go absolutely mad on drink friday and saturday and most pass out before the race starts!!! they will be relieving themselves anywhere they like and that can be up the mesh fence in front of you if your sat on the grass banks:w00t:

I used to go to WSB as that is run on the Sunday (again i don’t know why GP is on the Saturday) and rode to a hotel that was about 40 mins from the circuit, it gave us a base to leave our gear and a nice ride to the circuit in the morning. Parking is fantastic, they have it all planned out and in most fields there are strips of concrete that run the length of the field so you can put your stand on it:cool:

I would suggest locating the circuit on a map and then look for hotels far enough away to not be too busy but close enough that you don’t have a huge ride in the morning.

As for where to sit, well most of the circuit is very open and once again it will depend on what you prefer to look at. The grandstands are booked up early and you are not able to buy tickets for them on the day. If you can pre order then do that, they offer shelter if it should rain, and it does, and also shelter if its scorching hot, which it can be, plus you get to see the start and finish, the pre race show and there are large screens to watch what you can’t see. Failing that i would try and sit near the final chicane as this is where all the last ditched attempts to overtake happen and you do have a few crashes there.

Saying all that, enjoy the atmosphere, you’ll love it.

There should be an overnight ferry from Harwich that takes you to Netherlands pretty close to Assen, probably 2-3 hours ride. The ferry itself is slow and expensive, like a hotel room, but you can sleep there and be at the continent early morning.

On a second thought, that route does not leave much to ride. So, it’s your choice.

I havnt been in Assen, so I don’t know about best stands or spots.
