Just noticed this in tonights London Lite, hope it isn’t true, although I wouldn’t be surprised they’re always looking for the chance to charge for something else.
“Drivers who stray into cycle lanes face fines of £120 under proposed new powers for London councils. Currently police are responsible for isssuing fixed penalty notices but only three were handed out in London in the last year. Under the new system, cycle lanes and cycle boxes at red lights would be monitored by civilians watching CCTV images.”
You guys need to check your Highway Code, not your tax code. AFAIK almost all bike lanes have a dashed line separating them from the carriageway. the HC allows you to cross a dashed line (see HC for conditions). So most of the time it won’t be an issue. Except for the cycle boxes at traffic lights they are a solid line (but I think they are under the traffic light stop line rules anyway - so nothing new).
Can’t see it beeing a big issue in practice compared with bus lanes, no turns etc.
