Has anyone on here ever modified a Leatherman tool ? I’m looking to buy a new one and remove the knife and the saw, and replace these with placeholder blades or a blank of some sort.
Anyone got any ideas on how to do this ?
All of the Leatherman type tools that are legal to carry at all times are the keyring sized jobbies and they’re not really up to some of the bigger challenges or jobs in life. I did mail Leatherman in the US asking them to create a “Leatherman pussy” edition, similar to what Spyderco did with their UK pen knife, but they declined on the basis that their tools that aren’t legal for every day carry are selling well here, so they don’t see a market.
You will struggle - They have those special security heads (torx?).
My one is the old one so has a five star head with the dimple in the middle, they have changed them on the new ones.
I bought some tools on Amazon to tighten it but the screwdrivers didn’t do anything as they were too soft.
In theory, they have a lifetime guarantee so you could buy one and send it off and ask them to remove the bits you don’t want or alternatively get out the metal cutter and cut them off so that there is just a stub to fold and take up the gap.
aslong as the blade is under three inches and not a locking blade it is legal id just say the new ones have locking peices id just sort of take the locking part off. I find haveing some sort of knife on me is usefull could allways just blunt it with a dremmal or file and carry a difrent sort of knife.
I don’t know about the product, just looked at a few googlepictures and well if you can buy it, get it home then find the bits are fixedin place, what I’d do is get an angle grinder on the parts you don’t want. That’llget rid of them.
What d you want to carry this for? Is it work? Is it for on the bike?
I only ask because technically anyone carrying a pointed or bladed article is guilty of the offence, but may have good reason/excuse to carry it.
For instance, a chef carrying his (rather expensive) knives to or from work is guilty of carrying a pointed or bladed article, but has an excuse to do so. Same as a biker carrying a set of tools under the bike seat. However, if the same chef were to be walking home from work and decide to go to the pub on the way home to meet friends, he no longer has the reasonable excuse, as he should have dropped them at home first etc… The law is very funny about these things.
When it comes to the Leathermans set of multi-tools it’s a bit of a minefield. If you carry it as part of your job (electrician/squaddie/copper etc…) then it’s fine. But if you’re just walking around in public then you are committing the offence without reasonable excuse and can be arrested for carrying a pointed or bladed article.
So, if you are buying it for work, don’t worry about using it in that capacity, but if you want to carry it for every day use, probably best to get the one in the link above or get a Gerber (where you can remove the blades with minimum effort).
It doesn’t help. At all. I’m very aware of the Dennis Deegan and Harris cases that brought this stupidity into being, and I think they’re ridiculous, which is why I’m trying to find a legal alternative.
I carry a Leatherman because it’s literally saved my life on a number of occasions. I use it at work, I use it in my hobbies (photography and sound) and I use it on the bike. The problem is, taking it to work legally means never going to the pub for a drink after work with the guys, because while I have a reason to have it at work, there is no excusable reason to have it at the pub. And work are pretty clear on not leaving valuables lying around.
The Fuse from the link is utterly worthless for many jobs. The tool blades don’t lock into place, and this makes it a dangerous tool under many circumstances.
Leatherman won’t create a pussy version for denizens of this fair isle, the government won’t listen to reason on the topic and it’s just one more stupid bloody situation where the law is not absolute and the exceptions are not clearly defined and it’s left up to a load of people’s discretion as to whether or not to ruin your life.
Rant over. I’m leaving. Bye. Someone deco my account.
Worthless. None of the tools lock open, so under pressure they will fold and injure you.
There’s a reason the Leatherman and Gerber tools evolved from the victorinox tools - they added safety as a feature. But nanny doesn’t believe in true safety, so she bans them.
I don’t carry mine about with me and it rattles around in the topbox on the bike but…I have been searched by police officers doing a general stop and search on the embankment and they did not mention it or confiscate…It continues to rattle around in the topbox to this day
All Locking ImplementsThe problem with most multi-tools is that they include a knife which locks the same way as the other tools do. This means you could get into trouble with the law if you carry the tool without good reason, and “just in case I need it” is not a valid reason. You can buy one of the few none-locking models available but this makes the other tools less easy and safe to use.So the knifeless fuse is a great solution. Carry a decent set of locking tools anytime without worrying about the legality of the knife. Nicely made thing, very light weight, excellent price on Amazon
Alternatively if the blade on the Leatherman is 3" or less, you could just take a dremel to the bit of the locking tang that locks the knife blade making it non-locking whilst leaving the rest of the tools with their locking ability intact.
Don’t worry bout that, Draper do a “Security head” tool kit for about £19.00… its got ALL those weird heads, like stars, and triangles and two points and weird shite… if this is all that’s holding the process up, drop past and borrow mine any time… PM me if addy needed…
