booked myself into the Erith MDTC for my Mod 2 test beginning July. Just wondered whether anyone has done their Mod 2 in Erith and can pass any suggestions/tips or any info on to me?
Starting to get slightly nervous about the test, not living in that area at all (Kingston is my home playground) so thought of heading out to Erith for a day to get a bit more familiar with the local area.
Or anyone out there who has done their Mod 2 recently is interested in a ride out in Erith?
I am planning of doing my Mod 2 without any lessons, just reading up on my roadcraft and relying on my experience from riding around London for a year now…Hope that’s not foolish.
I passed at Erith MPTC and I didn’t know the area. It’s a good area area to do the test imo - reasonably quiet, no weird junctions. I think the thing to watch tho are the speed limit changes (mostly 30s and 50s, with a few 20 zones I think).
I’m training my brother for mod 2 at Erith, so if you want you’re welcome to come along with us this weekend. We can make sure you do your checks at the correct times (lifesavers, side glances, etc.).
Btw (as you’re probably aware) if you do the test on an automatic, your licence will only be valid for automatic two-wheelers.
cheers - and thanks - sounds that Erith was a good decision…
would be fantastic to join you guys for a ride out around Erith - only cannot do this weekend as I am heading out to Switzerland - how about the following weekend?
and yeah - automatic all the way for me - I am toying with the idea of getting an Aprilia Mana GT or maybe that Honda DN1 - althought seeing it on the road once - it does look rather odd…
I did my test at Erith too. My instructor knew the examiner well and had sold his son some hifi equipment as I recall.
I would totally agree with seba, even though we spent the day around Erith practising I still got onto a dual carriageway and before I had a chance had gone past the speed signs. I was going along in the middle lane intending to slowly pass a car on the inside lane and I looked in my mirror and the examiner was still sitting in the inside lane so I thought uh-oh and proceeded to move back in. There was something about his position that told me I might be going to fast by passing this guy.
I managed to lose him in some traffic so that also used up some time and then got stuck in some heavy traffic going through a main street.
I passed, but he said that some of my observation was so late that I might not have bothered but at that point I couldn’t really care.
I think Erith is a nice place to do your test as it is reasonably quiet and there aren’t really a whole lot of problems. As I recall the last few minutes back before the test center there was one or two junctions that weren’t completely clear but I think as long as you don’t dither you will be fine.
I would show you my route, but unfortunately I am out of the country shortly and am tied up till then. If I can knock up a route planner I’ll pm you.
Good luck.
I recently had an email from the DSA stating that hire vehicles will not be allowed on test as they are not insured for the purpose.
You should check that bikes are not included in this.
I had the email regarding car tests, but i would imagine the same principles apply for bikes. The vehicle has to be insured for test use, as you are a Learner and driving/riding without help from your instructor… bloody insurance lol. It might be ok, but you should check before you turn up on the day… If you are doing the test at Erith, I would definately check…
Thanks Mel, will do - apparently it’s raining tomorrow too, yeh, don’t fancy riding from romford to erith in the rain avoiding motorways to be told to go away
Yeh, you’re allowed to do your module 2 on a rental bike, checked with DSA and the test guy didn’t mind - He asked if this is my bike, I said no, rental - he didn’t ask for any paperwork, just said cool, just sign this that it’s insured, etc.
