Mixed 10w-30 oil in with 10w-40 by mistake.

I mixed about 1.5 litres of 10w-30 oil in with the recommended 10w-40 oil in my last oil change about 1500 miles ago* - will this cause any damage?

*By mistake - I bought the same brand of oil - Castrol GPS motorcycle oil - but bought a 4l can of 10w-30 instead of 10w-40 by mistake - only realised when I took a closer look at the label on the can today.

Thanks for any info. :slight_smile:

Just read that ‘A motorcycle transmission can degrade a 10W40 oil into a 10W30 oil in around a thousand miles’ - so it’s probably an academic question anyway. . .

so the 10W30 will equally now be 10W20…
and the total oil would actually be 10W25?

:smiley:

:w00t::stuck_out_tongue:

F8ck I hadn’t thought of that. . . :w00t:

Why can’t the assholes print this info in BIGGER LETTERS -on the front of the can - otherwise they look identical. . .

Not ideal, but I’m sure you’ll be fine.
I’m sure there’s a tolerence in your handbook which both those oils fall between.

Any experts here?

yep there is a range of oils that can be put in an engine that is dependant mostly on temperature…

Thanks - I’m sure it’s fine - yes - I guess you would use a lighter weight oil like 10w-30 in colder operating conditions and 10w-40 in summer - if you can be arsed. :slight_smile:

Won’t make bugger all difference mate;)

Thanks CM! :slight_smile: My mind is now at rest. . .

now what anally retentive problem will I discover next?! :w00t::stuck_out_tongue:

This should be my avatar. . . An anally retentive geek. . . :smiley:

:hehe: you said anal :blush:

Sorry, my puerile sense of humour coming out

:w00t::smiley:

Don’t knock geeks . . .

As Bill Gates once said in a lecture to school kids:

“Be nice to Geeks, you will probably end up working for one some day”

Oil technology is fascinating (if you have an inquiring mind)!

Doug

My mistake, he actually said:

“Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one”

But I think he also pointed out that:

“A nerd is very similar to a geek, but with more RAM and a faster modem”

Don’t know wha he has to say about pedants tho’ :smiley:

Being a pedant is defintiely worse than being a geek.

Pedants are unimaginative and obsessed with rules and regs - at least geeks are often creative.

I so hope I’m not a pedant. . . :crazy:
