Hi, can’t find a deff answer for this one - somebody here bound to know:

Thanks

:wink:

I think the law is for the MOT that you need to have a right hand mirror fitted.

I might take mine off to make squeezing through gaps easier - I think the only time I use my mirrors is to check to see if I’ve been flashed by a camera :smiley:

That doesnt mean to say Im not aware of whats around me tho :wink:

Regulation 33 Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986…

Item 5.
There are no requirements for a mirror to be fitted to a two-wheeled motor cycle with or without a sidecar attached.

However, if mirrors are fitted to the above vehicle then it must comply with the following

(a) if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st October 1978, the mirrors must comply with

(i) item 2 of Annex 1 to Community Directive 71/127 79/795 or 80/780; OR
(ii) Annex II to Community Directive 86/562 or 88/321; OR (iii) paragraphs 4 to 8 of ECE Regulations 46.01
AND paragraph (4) of this regulation

(b) in any other case, no requirements apply.

Paragraph (4) mentioned above says…

33(4) Unless provided for in paragraph (5), in the case of a motor vehicle falling within paragraph A1 in item 1 , A2 in item 5, or within item 6,:

(a) each mirror shall be fixed to the vehicle in such a way that it remains steady under normal driving conditions;

(b) each exterior mirror on a vehicle fitted with windows and a windscreen shall be visible to the driver, when in his driving position, through a side window or through the portion of the windscreen which is swept by the windscreen wiper;

© where the bottom edge of an exterior mirror is less than 2m above the road surface when the vehicle is laden, that mirror shall not project more than 20cm beyond the overall width of the vehicle or, in a case where the vehicle is drawing a trailer which has an overall width greater than that of the drawing vehicle, more than 20cm beyond the overall width of the trailer;

(d) each interior mirror shall be capable of being adjusted by the driver when in his driving position; and

(e) except in the case of a mirror which, if knocked out of its alignment, can be returned to its former position without needing to be adjusted, each exterior mirror on the driver’s side of the vehicle shall be capable of being adjusted by the driver when in his driving position, but this requirement shall not prevent such a mirror from being locked into position from the outside of the vehicle.

So you don’t need mirrors on a motorbike… but if you do have them, there’s a lot of rules they have to conform to.

Cheers +1

I think I get the message, but is that available in English?

Good summation. I understood that bit.

Exterior mirrors? How many motorcycles have interior mirrors?

I guess you could fit one to a BMW c1 or a Benelli Adiva. I think it is even possible to get a conversion kit for one of the Pugs so it becomes enclosed.

Mirrors on my gixer are so useless they may as well not exist.

You can always keep your mirrors closed if you wanna go through small gaps, I close one of mine now and agin to scrape through tiny gaps between cars.:slight_smile:

i dont have mirrors there not cool:D:hehe: i have just fitted a small wide angel thingy but mostly to see if there is another moto on my tail. also dont have indicators:w00t:
