Came off the VFR on the way home Friday night - residential street, car in front indicating to turn left into his driveway suddenly stopped because his kid’s tricycle was in the middle of his drive. I was doing about 15mph, touched the brakes and the back just went. I bounced, the VFR slid gently under the back of his car, only damage a cracked headlamp and a mangled left R&G bobbin, and he lost some paint from the rear lower bumper bit. He was really nice about it, apologised for having stopped so suddenly and is offering to pay 1/3 of the paint repairs to his car if I pay the rest. I think I’ll take it, his insurers wouldn’t be so generous I’m sure! The annoying thing is I had plenty of room to stop if the VFR had stayed upright.
Two lessons - 1. the roads are **** at this time of year, even on ‘good’ days. 2. Fit R&Gs, they saved me hundreds in plastic. The VR slid along on the left bobbin, bar-end (also R&G) and the rear footrest bracket, nothing else was on the ground. Except me…
Good that you walked away from it all. Nice that the driver is willing to split costs as well. R&G’s have saved me as well, so they are a brilliant investment. A question, could you have gone around the car instead of trying to stop? Or was there oncoming traffic.
Glad your ok MW. The roads seems even more slippery than usual this time of year judging by the amount of offs (I can’t tell as I’ve been off biking with a broke leg) - perhaps the highways agency are using a new type of grit?
is crap condtions out, is much better today, seems the heavy rain over the weekend has helped, roads are clean and fairly grippy? at least from mine to work they were.
the SV was spinnign the rear up an awful lot last week, bit too much throttle and spin/sideways oops…shuts throttle and a$$hole goes back to regaular size…:w00t:
In the knowledge that this sounds pious - have you ever considered altering your riding styles, given the conditions?
The weather is shitty, the road is colder, there may/may not be some magic slip stuff on the roads but it’s all rideable.
3 crashes in 7 years is not to bad considering the above and all three crashes have been because of the above and not having to stop fast or take avoiding action because of another road user.
i dont generally ride fast in traffic or when the road is busy, all 3 have been on the exit of an empty corner.
hummm but maybe a little less gas at the exit may be in order untill it warms up a bit… :hehe:
That was unfortunate. Nice of the driver to be sympathetic though. It’s very slippy out there. I’ve seen a few cars unintentionally spinning their wheels pulling out of junctions.
