Mayor Election 2008

anyone who stops somebody from getting a job based on color or creed needs a smack in the mouth…let alone to be voted to be mayor…

red ken out!!!

smiled:D.

Boris gets my vote purely for the fact that he’s not a complete tit, unlike Red Ken!!!

However, no matter who gets voted in, we will all get shafted in some way or another! Whether it’s congestion charges or parking charges, it will eventually happen! The main thing is that the person in charge has the balls to take stock of TFL, and force some changes. Starting with the state of the roads in London, and spending more of the money on the public transport etc… rather than just lining the pockets of a bunch of bloody public school yahoo’s who spend their weekends driving their shiny sports cars in the country!!!

Rant over… Please feel free to call me a tit if I’m wrong! lol:D

Anybody is better than the cynical idiot we have now. My vote is for Boris, he’s definitely a petrol head as mentioned above

All what Boris says is things like “the tube must be improved so that the improvements we were promised will happen”, “the streets must be made safer to encourage Londoners to cycle and enjoy outdoor activities”, “the tube must be made more affordable and reliable” etc.

All this is very nice, but a key underlying issue remains: how are all these improvements going to be funded? Nowhere in his campaign website does he talk about how he is planning to fund his proposals. Making the tube cheaper, great, but then how is he going to pay for the improvements on it that he is talking about?

It’s just a load of nice initiatives with no fundamental thought on how to implement them.

how are all these improvements going to be funded?

The Buses were sold off to fund the improvements to the Underground. That’s why there are so many different Bus Companies operating in London.

One can only surmise that the money was misappropriated or at least mismanaged.

I have just found out on the net that Boris is in favour of scrapping the western extension of the congestion charge… which means that there would be more traffic hence more risk of accidents, more pollution due to higher emissions etc. This is contradictory to his proposed environmental policy and his cycling hobby. He won’t have my vote, that’s for sure. I’ll vote for Ken.

I live on the edge of the “western extension” zone. So I can speak with personal knowledge. There has been no drop in traffic levels since it was forced upon us. The majority of the pollution in my area comes from the Westway/A40.

This is incorrect I’m afraid. Statistics show that there has been a traffic drop of 15% in the western extension zone due to fewer cars entering the zone from the West of London. The traffic could be reduced even further if no discount was available to residents. The fact that residents have a 90% discount irrespective of whether they use their cars or not is silly because it encourages them to use it. The discount should be taken off them and then a massive traffic drop would be achieved. I think this should be the next development stage of the congestion charge scheme.

Traffic levels in the original zone dropped initially but have progressively increased back to pre-congestion charge levels. The latest increase was brought about by the western extension - this brought more residents into the zone who are now able to travel into the orginal zone at no extra cost. This means that the further the zone is extended the less effective it becomes.

I find it astonishing that a so-called socialist should use a tax to drive poor people off the roads. If congestion charging works it prices the poor off the roads and allows the rich to drive in congestion free luury.

Besides exemtions for hybrid cars such as the Lexus 4x4 show that the charge is not about congestion but is just another way for Livingstone to raise taxes.

I have never wanted to vote Tory before -Livingstone is unique in driving me to do it.

You actually believe a word that tfl says? As Chelseafan says traffic levels are back to where it was before Taking away the discount from residents???. Why not go the whole hog and ban all cars totally. While we are at it ban people from stopping and talking on the pavement so we can all get around faster. Or if your surname starts with the letter A - J you can only go out on alternate days.Jo Stalin would have liked that one.
