Maybe its just not meant to be...

So I return home from work last night at 7:30pm to find that my motorcycle was gone.

I park it in a dedicated motorcycle parking area with a Oxford BOSS disc lock.

So I call the police to report it stolen, and they give me another number to call to check that it had not been impounded.

So I call the impound this morning at 8am to find that it has been impounded because it had no tax disc. If I picked it up before 11am it would cost 80 quid, after than 160 quid to release from impound.

I only bought the bike a week ago with a full mot but no tax.

To get a tax disc, you have to have insurance. So I bought insurance on line - and my policy came in the mail on Friday.

For my troubles I had to pay 25 quid for a taxi to Tottenham, and 80 quid to free the bike from impound, and lost half a days pay (as I am a contractor).

Do the biking gods just not want me to own a motorcycle!?!?!

So the vehicle was taxed but you didn’t have the disc yet? Or the vehicle just wasn’t taxed?

well :ermm: no, it’s just that your a tw@t for having a untaxed motorcycle on the road.
if you got your insurance docs through on friday, you had like three days to get the tax issue dealt with!.

no excuses, served you right!.

harsh (but true)

you win some you lose some. You probably didn’t see it as a gamble, but it certainly was one that didn’t pay off.

i agree

Tells it like it is

At least it was just impounded and not stolen. Now that would have been harsh.

Nasty, but you should have kept it in your garage. No Tax = impound.

No need to call the geezer a twat.

i cant even believe that you would even consider riding a bike that wasnt taxed, why did you not get it taxed earlier? you certainly wont do that again in a hurry!

Put it down to experience mate.

There’s loads of untaxed vehicles on the roads and it’s a big issue - it sometimes follows that no tax can also mean no insurance and also no licence and other offences so it’s another good reason that police. traffic wardens are so hot on it.

For ages the message has been clear - no tax and you could even have the bike crushed.

macp is correct, insurance depends upon mot and tax, without one or the other = no insurance. These insurance companies will take any excuse to walk away from you - overloading, tyre tread, mechanical fault, no tax. It all adds up to no insurance, and the last thing you want is to ride around with no insurance…

Dont get dispondant tho, its the only way to travel in this godforsaken city, live and learn and thank feck it wasnt with worse consequences.

Good luck matey! hope to see you around.

Damn I you guys just gave me a lashing!!!

I just bought the bike (untaxed) and didn’t realise that this is an impoundable offence.\

In Aus we don’t have the concept of tax - so its new to me.

Yes I was insured (bought it on line the day I bought it), but paperwork takes time.

Sometimes you guys may forget that not every country has the same rules and processes.

Maybe I should have asked for advice in advance.

yes and its just how stupid this country has become…who gives a lordy! that it is three days over due tax…once paid you pay for a month if you tax it on the 1st or the 31st…total crap that you got a fine…

This is the complete arse that the UK has become…tax is so important that we have to impound your vehicle for it being three days overdue…yes of course it is…5000 pound fine for illegally sorning your vehicle…what total crap…

road tax is just an excuse to get cash from drivers and road users. it means nothing other than another level of civil servants.

And to hear everyone here saying it serves you right is just how far this crap has infiltrated normal minded people.

Nail. Head. On. The.

I agree with the above - but as self-admittedly not familiar with UK practices you would have done much better by asking here first.

FWIW I abhor people who ride with one of the three (MOT, Tax, Insurance) infulfilled. You are the problem when it comes to that unexpected off. Be legal or do a few more days on Oyster. If Ginger can do it, so can all the others.

Strange.

When I was buying a new bike I was requested to sent insurance policy number to the dealer, they’ve taxed it and after that I was allowed to collect it.

That’s what OTR means I suppose

Your insured without tax!

Think tax goes forward to the next month after mid-way through the month(15th) no? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

sometimes it just works out **** for you!

When I bought my bike I insured it And the seller assured me it was in MOT but I made the mistake of forgetting to ask about tax! I went to pick it up and realised the mistake! took the chance of getting home and survived! but then spent a week or so sorting stuff out!

Couldnt get it taxed cos my insurance company sent me a photocopy of my certificate which apparently is now common. It was just the idiot who thought he new best at the post office! finnaly got that agreed but then they umed and ared about the log book cos it was a different name! I explained I’d just bought the bike and agreed to send it there and then! sorted?

Finally the idiots at the DVLA sent me my reg doc and spelt mt name wrong! grrrrrrrrrr second go and 3 weeks after purchase and I was set. Youve just gotta be organised about how you do it all! Dont take **** from the post office and right your name in huge fricken letters on the reg doc

Only if you got existing tax to the end of the month can you buy it in advance to start at the beginning of next month.

FFS peeps, tax on motorbikes is a pittance compared to some cars. I’m very happy that some of it might be spent on maintaining the roads, which is more important to bikes than cars.
