Manky gloves!

My beloved summer leather and carbon gloves are getting more than a little bit scuzzy on the inside and are in need of a good clean. There’s no liner in then that I can pull out and wash separately, so how do I go about getting them back to a more acceptable level of cleanliness? The outsides are ok - it’s the insides that are rather manky.

Can I put them in the washing machine and then feed them like mad, for example? I don’t want to risk fubar’ing them as I don’t have a spare stupid amount of £s to replace them.

I use saddle soap (you can get it from amazon for about £4) to clean/condition leather gloves.
Definitely wouldn’t use a washing machine.

I bung em in the washer

I bung all my gear in the washer that’s textiles and leathers

Sorry Janie, I missed the gloves part of this post, sorry about sniffing yer cleavage in the Ace this morning, smelled fragrant, realised my error.

Yeah, yeah, the old, I didn’t realise you meant your gloves, chestnut ;).

I did wonder why you wanted to get intimate with the inside of my jacket - but I wasn’t complaining, either!

I think I’m going to risk the washing machine for my gloves, but with something a bit milder than the usual washing liquid. I’ve got some Nikwax Tech Wash, so I’ll try that. What’s the worst that can happen… ?

Famous last words.

Suggest if they mean a lot to you, take them to a dry cleaners. They’re experts in this sort of thing.

Washing machines have been known to turn leather items into a horrible pulp.

If you are intent on saving the £5 and washing it yourself, go for a leather specific treatment.

I’ve always hand washed my gloves and then retreated once they’ve dried. Never had any problems apart from the fact that the winter gloves take ages to dry out naturally.

Then again, my stuff is mostly cheap so I’m not that precious about it.

Janey- if you want to try some saddle soap then let me know- I have plenty here.
I’m certain you’ll prefer it to throwing it in the washing machine- especially if you’ve spent a decent amount of money on them.

I think you should take up Hogtrumpets offer of saddle soap and hand wash them in cool water and then condition them like crazy.

It rubs the lotion onto its skin…

AARRRGGGHHHHH!!! The BF quotes that to me when he catches me moisturising my legs. You’re both very creepy men at times. Shudder :w00t:

Thanks for the offer of your saddle soap (though why you have a large stash of it you might want to explain in private). I have various pony owning relatives, so getting hold of some isn’t a problem.

I’ve been a bit impetuous (that can be read as ‘stupid’) and I’ve bunged them in the washing machine on a delicate cycle with some Tech Wash and they’re merrily tumbling away right now. Lets see just how badly this turns out.

I use silk liner gloves inside both my summer and winter bike gloves (both leather) i.e. all year round.
They are quite light weight but do seem to absorb all the sweat from my sweaty mits.
They are washable and get chucked in the washing machine every month or so.

That prevents my bike gloves getting manky inside.

Job done

A fiendishly simple solution to my grubby mitts. Why didn’t I think of something so obvious, darn you?

And I get the feel of silk next to my skin when I’m riding, purrrrrrrr

Ha.
No worries- let us know how it goes.
TBH I’ve never dared put leather into the washing machine- I don’t want it deforming or stretching too much.
I’ve had it dry out too quick before and it is never quite the same- I’ve always been really conservative with it and it tends to last me.
I still have a 1960’s jacket that used to be my Dad’s than is in pretty good condition considering it is 50 years old.

As to why I have such a large stash- I’m afraid I’ll have to leave that to your imagination.
